#AmKenyan 1. Good morning #KOT. Last week, I did a post pleading not to be added to any more wassup groups to help fundraise for needy children who couldn't join high school as I was stretched and unable to help all. That plea brought my way what I call a MIRACLE.
A THREAD.
#AmKenyan 2. In 2010, I lost my sister Wanjiru. She suddenly fell ill and upon hospitalisation, was wrongly diagnosed, given antibiotics and discharged. She past away in her sleep a day after leaving hospital. Pneumonia killed her. A treatable illness took Shiro from us.
#AmKenyan 3. From when we were kids, Shiro had a strong passion for kids. Especially those who were from a slum near where we lived. I remember her taking food from our house to go feed them and wanted to be a pre-school teacher when she grew up. She did become a teacher.
#AmKenyan 4. Shiro was able to change the lives of kids around her, not because she was wealthy but through a network of friends and family who supported her dream. Unfortunately, when she left us, most of the kids had to discontinue their education.
#AmKenyan 5. Though Shiro inspired me to fight for and work with kids, non of anything I have managed to do would have been possible without friends, family and even strangers holding my hand and supporting my 'madness' as some call it, along the way.
Here comes my MIRACLE!
#AmKenyan 6. After my plea not to be added to any more groups to fund raise for school fees, a total stranger contacted me with a proposal. She asked that I select 10 needy children from all over KENYA who had scored 370 and above and she would sponsor ALL of them!
#AmKenyan 7. I then did a post on our group @Buyer_bewareKE on facebook asking members to propose children we can support. Over 40 suggestions were forwarded on the page and inbox. It took the whole weekend to do homework on those proposed. Many more offers to sponsor came in!!!
#AmKenyan 8. The first sponsor who was willing to take 10 kids even allowed me to do a few more. By yesterday she had written cheques for 13 kids! Other sponsors who have reached out are taking on the rest. These are total strangers to me and to these kids.
Isn't that a MIRACLE?
#AmKenyan 9. The kids selected either come from very poor homes, are orphans, or have been affected by HIV. Many had admission letters to National Schools and had tried to apply for bursaries and scholarships in vain. Suffering brought about by THIEVING VISIONLESS poliTRICKSIANS
#AmKenyan 10. Thank you #KOT and FB family. We may live in a shit-hole but acts of kindness like these remind us of the beauty of humanity. By the time I am done with the list and sponsors offering support, over 30 kids may finally have a shot at a life they deserve! ASANTENI!
