Oh boy, with all the Resident Evil talk someone asked me how I'd rank the RE games. So here comes a tweet wall with my opinions since I'm fired up right now on RE3 hype. Keep in mind these are just my opinions (& I have a few controversial ones). I've played all the game but the
two Outbreak games, the second Gun Survivor game based off of Code Veronica (I hope to amend this sooner than later), and the mobile games. So without further ado, from favorite to least favorite (and some notes from me along the way, I'm a bit wordy):
01. Resident Evil 4
02. Resident Evil REmake

These two are pretty common favorites, I fit the mold here. RE4 is what got me into horror games, but ultimately the reason I choose it over REmake is because after much deliberate thought I realized my least favorite moment in REmake
(the Mines) I like less than my least favorite moment in RE4 (a certain sequence on the Island). Still it's always been very close for me.

03. Resident Evil 7
04. Resident Evil REmake 2

Now, these two are also very close to me, but I have a few reasons I prefer RE7 even though
I'd actually say RE7 has more flaws than REmake 2. I actually think the Baker family is some of the best antagonist the series has ever had, they're really fun villains. I love the setting and atmosphere of RE7, & things about RE7 resonated a lot with me. RE2 is more fun to play,
but I think RE7 has more interesting locales and occurrences. I have a big thing about strong settings being important to me in horror games, and the rotting farm I enjoyed a lot. Also RE7's DLC does push it over for me, I really enjoyed End of Zoe, Not a Hero, Bedroom, Daughters
and a few of the DLC pieces really made it feel like a great little RE package with a lot of variety. I can completely see others preferring REmake 2, and I almost do, but RE7 edges it a bit for my personal taste.

05. Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
06. Revelations 2

Here we go.
RE3 is my favorite of the classic trilogy, I just find it the most fun to play & loved how they realized Raccoon City in the game. I really, really like RE3's locations, level design, weapons and what Nemesis brings to the game. I love how certain elements are randomized, though
it's not without faults, namely I think the Grave Digger graveyard boss fight in the original RE3 is actually the worst boss in the series. I actually hate it.

Revelations 2 being this high for me will be controversial for some I'm sure, but I have my reasons. Firstly let me say
I've played a lot of horror games from all eras, I've at this point have played around 3/4ths of every horror game released on the PS1/PS2. I often play old games back-to-back with newer ones, I think my sense of "jank" is nullified, I more am interested in what the experience
gives to me, and Revelations 2 gave me a lot more than I expect. I was actually de-hyped for Rev 2 on reveal, Revelations 1 I think is the most average RE game, and the early screens of the prison area didn't do much for me. I started getting more curious though, of all things,
when Barry was revealed, but not because of his inclusion, because in his reveal there were trailer shots of him in some dark woods. That's strangely something the series had never done before, & I was interested in how a RE game may handle a open dark wood setting.

So flash to
the present, I loved Rev 2. I think the characterization of Barry, Moira, Natalia and Alex in particular (sorry Claire, she was okay but a bit behind if I'll be honest) was really entertaining to watch, and though I know some hate it I love Rev 2's grimey aesthetic. Moreso, the
various locations all do interesting things with level design I feel and all feel different to each other. The Prison doesn't feel like the Forest which doesn't feel like the city which doesn't feel like the factory, and so forth and so on. Plus I play all the RE games on release
at their default available highest difficulty, and Revelations 2 blind on Hard is one of the few times in a RE game I ever struggled for ammo and had to make tough choices of how to handle scenarios. But I loved that! Plus as Rev 2 is the only RE game with stealth mechanics and
two characters that play differently, it allows you to strategize more on how to tackle scenarios, which I greatly enjoyed. So between the characters, the varied level design, the tougher resource management (on Hard at least) and more options to strategize approached with, it
ended up being being my sixth favorite RE game. I also like some of the monsters like Pedro, the hidden weakpoint enemies, the Uroboros leg things. I see many are ehh on Rev 2's enemies, but I liked them!

07. Resident Evil 2
08. Resident Evil 5

So, on RE2 and RE5...
Resident Evil 2 I like less than a lot of people, but I still love it. I'd probably like RE2 if there wasn't one really controversial opinion I have about RE2...

I think RPD Police Station in the original RE2 is kinda' iffy in it's level design.

So you spend over half of RE2 in
RPD Police Station, and RPD has some individually really cool rooms and moments, I will never deny that. But the actual way that RPD connects in the original RE2 I always had some problems with. In both RE1, RE3, and hell, even RE0 (we'll get to that) there's interesting ways
that the "hub locations" you spend the first half of the game in interconnect with each other.

RPD in the original RE2... Kinda' is just a figure 8 circuit. There's basically only a linear path on both entrances to the West and East Wing which divide in the middle. but what this
means is that you basically take the exact same routes over and over again to get to anywhere. I also think RPD overstays its welcome, towards the end when you're getting the chess plugs I begin to get bored of RPD. And the game doesn't have its first boss battle until literally
past the half-way mark of the game, and they pad out RPD by making zombies storm in through the windows half-way through (or on B-campaigns, having Mr. X moments).

I still really like RE2, I overall like it more than the original RE1, RE2 has some amazing moments, music, I think
RE2 really established the RE personality, and also the game is brief enough it's pretty fun to just kinda' go through when you feel like it, the original's A/B stuff is also cool, and RE2 has some cool monsters, Birkin is a cool RE monster and I like RE2's story more than RE1's
or RE3's... But I just have always had more issues with RE2 the original than most people I feel.

RE5 gets hated on a lot, but it's a really fun co-op game. I've played RE5 more than any other RE game simply due to it's co-op fun nature. There's some low points in the game, but
also high points! I think it has amazing art direction (it still looks pretty even 10 years later), I think RE5's weapon upgrade system is really satisfying, RE5 is loaded with little secrets and things to do even after you beat it. I also will say this right now, in my opinion
Lost in Nightmares and Desperate Escape are amazing pieces of DLC, I love playing both of them. Desperate Escape gets slept on a lot, but I think it perfectly enraptures the best part of RE5's gameplay, the tense strategizing against interesting monsters with a friend in crazy
mobs of monsters and scenarios as you push forward against them. Mercs is really fun, the co-op is actually a blast. I think RE5 honestly gets trashed talked more than it deserves.

09. Dead Aim
10. Resident Evil 6

Okay so hear me out here. These two may be my most controversial
RE opinions.

Firstly, Dead Aim I think gets fucking slept on more than it deserves. It's a surprisingly atmospheric game, it does have first-person shooting, but it plays more like somewhere half-way between the action direction the series would go in after it and the original
games with more focus on exploration, atmosphere and slowly unlocking a place. It takes a bit getting used to, and the first stretch of the game is honestly only so-so. but I think the middle part of Dead Aim is actually incredibly solid. I love how weird and messed up some of
Dead Aim's monsters are, I think Dead aim has the most original monsters in the series (and the concept of being in a waste disposal facility for failed B.O.W.s is just such a cool one). I think the game has a lot of interesting twists and turns to keep things interesting, and it
never overstays its welcome. I just find it surprisingly charming to play through. I do think the first and last 30 minutes are the weakest part of the game, but I kinda' really enjoy Dead Aim.

Resident Evil 6 has a lot of problems, like a lot of problems, a LOT of problems. BUT
There's a lot of dumb fun you can have in RE6 if you let yourself. The game is kinda' a train wreck, but it's such an uneven experience and it's kinda' fun to go through with a co-op partner through all of RE6's crazy and wacky shenanigans. Some of the level design is actually
atrocious, but others times it can be surprisingly well done. I don't think I've ever played another game that flip-flops so much between good and bad ideas and execution, and that's kinda' wild and fun to go through with a friend. There are actually moments of RE6's campaign I
love, and other moments I actually hate. But I always have fun playing it with people, especially those who have no idea what they're in for. Mercenaries in RE6 is a lot of fun, and I think I may be one of the only people on the planet who's played a decent amount of those DLC
multiplayer modes with friends (full parties even, convinced friends to play it with me, have had a lot of dumb fun in those too). I will say this, I played the game first on 360 pre-update, and have ever since then post-update on PC, and the PC version post-update does add so
much to the game experience, like it running 60fps with adjustable FoV and some of the fixes they apply did make me enjoy it a lot more.

Also, Leon's campaign is the worst one though I enjoy parts of it (and I love Leon's Chapter 4), Leon's actual story is also terrible, like
it's baaad. Jake's campaign has some of the lowest moments in the game, but I kinda' love Jake's Chapter 3 and Chapter 5. I also expected to hate Jake before release, but I don't. Chris' campaign is the most solid all around and also has the best story of them all. Ada's campaign
has it's moments, but also falls off a cliff with her Chapter 5 being like the worst of the worst in all of RE6. Also nearly every scene in RE6 involving helicopters SUCKS.

But that's where I sit on with RE6. Okay, the rest I don't have as much to say on, but a few comments.
11. Resident Evil 0
12. Resident Evil Revelations

RE0 I don't dislike as much as many people do. I actually love RE0's environments and puzzles. No joke, I think RE0 has the best puzzles in the entire franchise. It's HD Remaster is also insanely pretty. Billy & Rebecca are good
characters and you can't convince me otherwise. RE0 suffers some from some busywork that feels like busywork, a few annoying enemies and enemy placement, and sometimes the game just feeling kinda'... dry. I don't know how else to word it. Also most of RE0's boss battles suck, and
the enemy selection is a bit boring. But I still like it quite a bit.

Revelations 1 I think is the most average RE game. I love oceanic horror legitimately, but I actually find Revelations 1's boat sequence just not very engaging, I actually think Dead Aim and Resident Evil 7's
boat sequences are more interesting than most of Revelations 1's boat exploration. Some parts of Revelations 1 are just boring -stares at the two times you go through the Hunter-infected offices in flashback-. But there are things I like about Rev 1, namely I think the bosses are
mostly well done. Both the build-up to the bosses and the actual boss fights themselves are good. Hell, I'd even say in terms of boss consistency Rev 1 has the most consistently good boss battles outside of RE4. Raid Mode can also be pretty fun in shorter bursts with a friend.
The music in Rev 1 is also very well done. Anyways...

13. Resident Evil 1 (original)
14. Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles

I played RE1 a while after I played REmake, that probably wasn't the best way to enjoy it. I like some of the low-poly stuff of RE1, and a few things the
original game does are neat (and the bad voice acting is charming), but if I ever feel like playing RE1 I always turn to the REmake and only play RE1 if I want to do a complete series playthrough or something.

Darkside Chronicles has an amazing OST and is a very fun and unique
on-rail shooter that I actually quite enjoyed. I also wish Operation Javier was it's own RE4-styled RE game rather than on-rails, I actually like Operation Javier's story and setting and think it could make a good RE game by itself. Alas, Darkside is pretty good though.
15. Resident Evil: Code Veronica X
16. Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles

Okay, so Code Veronica I do have some things to say. I WANT to like it more than I do, I actually love the setting, music, characters (even fucking Steve is amusing to me), etc. But I have so many problems
with Code Veronica and it's actually the one of only two RE games (the other I'll get to) which actively make me frustrated and kinda' hate it while playing it. But Code Veronica does things that I also love about it. It ranks so low for me because, to lay it how plainly:
-Who fucking thought having regenerating enemies in certain areas was a good idea?
-Who thought having so many poison enemies in a RE game was a good idea?
-WHO THOUGHT PUTTING INFINITELY SPAWNING POISON MOTHS OUTSIDE OF THE ONLY SAVE ROOM IN AN AREA WAS A GOOD IDEA!?!?
-Having enemies that can literally hit you off the screen from long distances like Bandersnatches IS NOT FUN.
-Code Veronica has more back-tracking than any RE game I've ever seen, and it's often not even fun back-tracking.
-Code Veronica has more "inventory filling" puzzles than
RE0 does! And RE0 gives you two inventories!
-Speaking of inventory fun, don't you just love on your first playthrough the game doesn't telegraph AT ALL you're about to switch characters and all the items that character was holding you just NO LONGER HAVE ACCESS TO? This can even
break the game and make it unwinnable, though thankfully I never went through that.
-Code Veronica despite having no difficulty options I think is one of the hardest RE games, and not fun difficulty, it just has random spikes at moments. I play all the RE games on their default
hardest available difficulty, and none of other RE games have I died at as much as Code Veronica the first time blind.
-The boss battles in Code Veronica re trash.
-There's disappointing build-ups, like the fucking pool salamander that's built up to like a Xenomorph or something,
only to be some lazy Salamander who does nothing.

I could go on and say so much more, but I WANT to like Code Veronica, but so much about it's actual game design just makes me not enjoy it. I hope it gets a remake, it desperately is in need of one if you asked me.
Umbrella Chronicles is a pretty decent On-Rail Shooter. I can enjoy them, it's fun to play through. Kinda' fun seeing the cliffnote versions of past game events. RE3 got trashed and the new villain and his weird Tyrants are very goofy.
17. Operation Raccoon City
18. Resident Evil Survivor

So okay, the first time I played Operation Raccoon City, I actually hated it. Like it felt bad to play, I did not enjoy it at all. We got half-way through the game, and I quit.

I've played Operation Raccoon City and its DLC
two complete times since then, and strangely my opinion on it has improved. The main game is bad, but it can be some dumb fun at moments.

The weird thing is, the Spec-Ops DLC for Operation Raccoon City is strangely decent? Like for whatever reason it's a LOT better than the main
game in nearly every way. Like the level design is better, the lighting is better, the boss battles are better, the story is better, the music is better. I think after ORC review bombed Capcom must've stepped in to help with the DLC or something, because no joke, ORC's DLC is
actually decently fun. I don't hate ORC anymore, it can be fun, but it is a bad game, with a DLC campaign that's a lot better than the main game and an actually decently okay RE game.

Survivor I actually don't dislike, I kinda' like how the multiple path choice system works,
it's also pretty short so you can blaze through it. It's just also not particular remarkable. I'll play it, enjoy it, do a few paths, and be like, "That's enough Survivor for now." Some of the locations are kinda' cool for RE, like the church, the night club, the mountain pass.
19. Umbrella Corps
20. Resident Evil Gaiden

Umbrella Corps despite being so low on my list, I actually had fun with. I like it more than most. I don't ever want another RE game like it again, but it can be a lot of fun with friends actually. Once you begin to get a grapple with
how to play Umbrella Corps, it can get even a bit addicting to do well in, and there's some small funny little things you can do.

Resident Evil Gaiden is legitimately the only RE game I get nearly no enjoyment out of. I kinda' like it at first, but it gets worse and worse the
further into the game you go. By the end of it they literally are just throwing bullshit at you, and it's frustrating, badly designed & just... Not fun. Not fun at all actually. I feel no satisfaction from playing Gaiden. It's the only RE game I actually never want to play again.
And there's my Resident Evil opinions if you ever wanted to hear my thoughts I guess. I know I hold a few controversial opinions, but it's where the series entries sit with me. I have a feeling RE3 REmake is going to do very well with me.
