I just watched the end of law and order in the United States of America on cable television.

A anticlimactic event. Somber and quiet.

Now I’m watching Mitch McConnell’s smug smirk as he presents the Chief Justice with a gift for presiding over procedures.

It was surreal to watch, or rather listen, to senators loyal to a corrupt and dangerous criminal proudly proclaims his kingship.

There were no doubts whether Trump committed the crimes with which he was accused, & impeached in the House.

But guilt wasn’t considered.

I heard many Republicans gleefully and loudly proclaim “Not Guilty!”

Happy to throw a handful of dirt on the corpse that was law and order. A cadaver now partially buried for the nation, and through modern cable TV, to witness.

Going through motions that mimic official proceedings of a court, but really just well rehearsed autocratic theatre. Acted out by the Benedict Arnolds of the 21st century, the totality of their Republican party.

The world just became significantly more unstable and more dangerous.

Make note of this moment in time. Because we are witness to the end of an era. The end of a dream that was freedom.

Trump will use this Not Guilty verdict to consolidate power. He will continue to commit crimes of extortion, bribery, obstruction with assurances of impunity. We are witnessing the corruption in entirety of a once proud nation. An ally. Our strongest ally and military protection.

The fact we are immediately adjacent to the US is significant.

Canada’s national security was always guaranteed by the geolocation of our two nations.

The US just became a dictatorship. Trump is aligned with other autocrats & dictators. Not PM Justin Trudeau.

Would the US intervene if some adversary tried to annex parts or all of Canada? Today, the answer to that question is unknown. Canada’s entire existence as an independent nation (as opposed to a British colony), that has never been in doubt. It is today.

That’s the significance of the US senate vote.

The entire globe waits to determine Trump’s next move. How will he exercise his newly acquired power? How will that power be used and realized?

There are no longer any limits on his power.

Law and order have been eliminated as it applies to Trump and his Presidency.

Many in the past noted where they were the day Kennedy was assassinated, when 9/11 happened.

This is bigger in significance.

This could very well be the end of democracy in the US. And subsequently, the end of global democracy.

With the globe’s most powerful military enforcer taking a turn to autocracy, there is no law and order hegemon to protect and guard the globe’s democracies.

Our lives change from this point forward.

So, make note of the day and the fondness you have for democracy, stability, peace, and law and order.

Today, the guarantee it continues to exist, just became a lot more tenuous.
