Read this list of Russian characteristics.

I’ve been researching Russian asymmetrical warfare tactics and this difference in behaviour is definitely our Achilles Heel.
The Russian government has refined and perfected asymmetrical warfare for over a century. It’s their weapon of choice.

They don’t think or react the way western civilization does.
The scary part is they study how western civilization makes decisions and then use techniques they’ve mastered to influence future decisions unbeknownst to those making the decisions. They manipulate outcomes to further their interests.
But the western political and military leaders don’t realize they’ve been manipulated.

The embedded thread touches on many of these differences in approach.
Basically, this means when the wall came down in 1990, we metaphorically unleashed Pandora’s Box.

Western society still hasn’t figured out how Russian operatives manipulate situations. Often cajoled into self defeating decisions by Russian disinformation and active measures.
It’s just a Hollywood movie, but “Red Sparrow” illuminates some of these techniques. The training facility the main character attends prior to becoming a Russian spy portrays some of the mental manipulation and altered worldview Russia uses to perform foreign influence.
But it’s just a watered down version of the real thing.

The actual techniques are far more insidious and malevolent.
I’m not finished researching this phenomenon, but I’m understanding why my grandfather absolutely hated Russians.

Of course he spent three years in a Russian prison camp, but that didn’t explain the depth of his animus towards the Russian KGB and Government.
But I’m beginning to understand it now. Twenty years after his death.

I always found it weird that he didn’t hold as much animosity for the German Nazi’s who invaded his country. I always assumed it was because his mother was German.
But he disowned his only sister who married a Russian army commander during WW2. He never forgave her. His sense of betrayal was far worse than his utter disdain for Nazi’s and Fascism.

I’m finally beginning to understand why.
One of the glaringly obvious mistakes that I see many make is appealing to the human nature western democracies see as universal. The response to norm enforcement or application of shame to modify behaviour. It doesn’t work with Russian operatives.
It also isn’t working with the current iteration of far right ideologues. Including those in US & Canada.

US Democrats are appeal to future history books, & invoke personal shame and what they believe is human nature to cooperate and compromise. To “do the right thing.”
Many Canadians still continue to appeal to social norms when criticizing Conservatives. Often with little response and complete disregard.

There is a reason why appealing to the commonly accepted norms in our democratic society isn’t working, at all.
Because democracy isn’t the end goal for conservatives. It’s ordered liberty. Autocracy vs Democracy.

We assume at our peril that conservatives are operating under the same social conventions & norms all democratic societies use to maintain peace and order.
They aren’t. They are using a worldview that is more consistent and characteristic of Russians.

Putin uses ordered liberty to govern Russia. It’s a form of governance with the appearance of democracy, but under the mask of “freedom” is guided democracy.
Ordered liberty is a phrase Kenney and Harper have used with much frequency. Sounds somewhat progressive, but do Canadians really understand what ordered liberty is? I don’t think so.
Ordered liberty is the concept that god bestowed “Natural Rights” that everyone possesses. The “rights” correspond to religious dogma. God decreed the boundaries of social order to provide freedom for life, liberty and property. This is according to Burke. theimaginativeconservative.org/2017/10/edmund…
Those who promote ordered liberty believe that arbitrary rights not bestowed by god as “Natural Rights” create chaos and disorder.

So basically, ordered liberty is the far right’s rationalization for return to a Christian society governed by religious order.
This is the same ideological base used by Putin to maintain control and governance on the Russian people.

This is Burkian conservatism. The basis of far right ideology.

Without the natural laws of god, civilization is a tyrannical imposition of arbitrary rights.
So interpreted in real life terms, this means women were given the subordinate role to men by god. As long as they respect that boundary, they are “free” to be the woman that god gives them the “natural right” to be. But women’s “rights” are limited to those bestowed by god.
The idea that women are equal in importance to men is preposterous to the Burkian ideologue.

Starting to make sense now huh?

That explains the refusal to recognize LGBTQ human rights. Burkian conservatives abjectly refuse to consider LGBTQ as “natural.”
If the bible doesn’t permit it, then it’s an arbitrary right that goes against the “Natural Order.”

That’s Ordered Liberty. That’s the hidden and insidious mantra of US Republicans and Canadian Conservatives.

To them, anything other than their version of order is tyranny.
Liberalism, humanism is against the Natural Order. Socialism is complete chaos and a descent into unnatural disorder. That’s what modern conservatives or libertarians believe. That is what they are imposing on every social democracy globally.
That is why appealing to what many assume is their shared understanding of a personal conscience is an exercise in futility.

Their worldview no longer resembles western democratic ideals.

The definition of freedom & liberty is not based on the assumptions democracies have.
How did this come about?

I’m still researching that, so I can’t answer it right now.

But it is a bit unnerving that it’s the same ideology used by Putin to describe freedom and liberty for Russia.

There have always been libertarians & conservatives that share this worldview.
They’ve been embedded in American and Canadian society for our entire existence. But their influence has waned over the centuries. Until about 40 years ago. When a resurgence in this belief system started to organize and chip away at the foundations of social democracy.
Read the embedded thread. It will give you a better understanding of the Russian worldview, but even better, it’s very similar to the current philosophy and worldview of contemporary far right politicians in Canada and the US.
Seek first to understand, then to be understood.

We need to understand this worldview before we can guard against and fight its influence and domination of Canadian politics.
Here is an example from real world.
