Quick thread on the interview with Weinstein’s lawyer on The Daily. First, I feel very sorry for Donna Rotunno and whatever influenced her to have so much respect/empathy for men and near complete lack of it for women.

Highlights below.

1/
She believes the criminal justice system favors victims:

“I think 100% favor victims. I think prosecutors and police are afraid to be skeptical of complaining witnesses and accusers today.”

I’d be happy to send her Chanel Miller’s book so she can see how wrong she is.

2/
When asked about the power differential between Weinstein and his accusers, she says, “The notion that he could hurt them is absolutely ridiculous...if Harvey Weinstein called one of the other people in the industry and said, ‘don’t use Actress A...”

3/
“...they would have wanted to use Actress A 10x more. So that notion that he could hurt people’s careers I absolutely find ridiculous.”

In Hollywood or elsewhere, gatekeepers like Harvey have huge sway. That she thinks she can erase that by just saying it’s not true is absurd.
She argues that women who are assaulted are not taking enough responsibility for having placed themselves at risk.

“These are still choices women are making...and women have to start owning those choices. And they either have to say ‘not gonna do these things to attempt...”

5/
“...to get a job, or I’m going to own my choice for making that decision.’”

Great advice, Karen. 🙄

She goes on, “Women cannot be equal if women don’t start taking on equal risk. Women want men to take on all the risk, they wanna then put themselves...”

6/
“...in whatever situation they’re in and then walk out and say, ‘oh my god I had no idea that was gonna happen to me.’”

Right. Women def w a n t to get assaulted.

7/
She says she thinks both parties are responsible yet goes on to place the blame for assault squarely on the shoulders of women: “If you go to the hotel room...you continue to perpetrate a culture that allows that to be acceptable.”

8/
Let’s pause here. She’s seriously suggesting that going to the hotel room is what perpetuates the culture, NOT THE ACTUAL ASSAULT?!? Are we in the upside down??

9/
When asked why she thinks women lie about being assaulted, she says, “There is absolutely no risk for a woman to come forward now and make a claim. Zero.”

Again that reveals a complete lack of understanding of what people go through when they report. She should read Know My Name
Finally, she admits that she’s never been assaulted because she made the “right” choices, whatever those are: “I’ve always made choices from college age on...I just never put myself in any vulnerable circumstance, ever.”

11/
So when I walked down the hallway in between periods in middle school and another student reached out and grabbed my breast, what choice had I made there, Donna? Should I have stayed home from school? How should I have “owned” my responsibility for that happening?

12/
This is why we have such a problem with violence against women—it not only is normalized, but the victims, not the perpetrators, are blamed. Until we change this thinking, women will continue to be at risk. Despite whatever Donna thinks, that’s not a choice. It’s a fact of life.
