This weekend I've done a deep dive into CO2 emissions of gasoline and diesel production.

Turns out you must add a whopping 30% for gasoline and 24% for diesel!

So that's on top of the emissions in the brochure.

TR;DR: we always knew that diesel and gasoline didn't simply rain down into your tank but new studies show that more CO2 is emitted in the process of getting the stuff out of the ground: science.sciencemag.org/content/361/64…
And other new studies show that refineries also add a lot of carbon emissions. link.springer.com/article/10.100…

Everything taken together I will now use:

Gasoline: 3140 grams CO2 equivalent per litre
Diesel:3310 grams CO2 equivalent per litre

Germany introducing a hydrogen train and my buddy @MLiebreich pointing out all green electricity (as we have in the Netherlands) is still better. I would like to add some nuance because I think there is a place for three different approaches that together will replace diesel.
@MLiebreich Diesel is now operated on railway tracks where making an overhead line is uneconomical compared to using an relatively inefficient diesel motor.

If for some reason you can't change that at all, hydrogen is a GREAT alternative for diesel.
And as the production from hydrogen becomes cheaper and greener (now it's usually from natural gas with hardly any reduction in CO2 emissions) and as we get more experience with storage and regulations get updated I think it will outcompete diesel in trains.

Renewables are far from impossible. Short demonstration on how professors like @RogerPielkeJr (but also e.g. Vaclav Smil and David MacKay) make it sound much harder than it is.
The article quoting @RogerPielkeJr's great math argues we need degrowth and gives an example: energy for Morocco would require 800 km2 of concentrated solar!

Sound like a lot right?

Wrong. It's 0.2% of Morocco and could be done in the desert.
Then the example by @RogerPielkeJr: the world needs 1500 2.5MW windmills a day to go 100% renewable!

Sounds impossible right?

Well, let's correct the math first.

New windmills are now 10 MW so you need ~400 of those, not 1500.

I like the self reflection. He states he regularly writes about bad news, but "I fear that the news media and the humanitarian world focus so relentlessly on the bad news that we leave the public believing that every trend is going in the wrong direction."

The opposite is true!
Historically, almost half of all humans died in childhood. As recently as 1950, 27 percent of all children still died by age 15. Now that figure has dropped to about 4 percent.

Climate change is so hard to solve because the temperature change effects of CO₂ emissions are cumulative.

Temperatures will keep rising until CO₂ emissions reach zero (small circles in the figure).

This also means that 1.5°C warming is practically unavoidable.

The cumulative effects of CO₂ are well known, in fact, it turns out that CO₂ induced warming is proportional to cumulative CO₂ emissions.


Non-CO₂ emissions play an important role, but the temperature response is not cumulative.

2/
Because CO₂ emissions will not go to zero overnight, we are committed to more warming. We may also get additional warming on top from aerosol removal.

The CO₂ induced warming does not abate unless CO₂ is removed from the atmosphere. Increased climate impacts unavoidable.

1/ In my first research deep dive at @TheBlock__, I look at LocalBitcoins volumes. It turns out that 26.5% of all LocalBitcoins volumes are currently coming from Russia. Russia’s volumes are two times as high as the trailing Venezuela, which is at 12.2%

2/ LocalBitcoins data is fascinating because it is separated by countries. The data can be used as a proxy for measuring demand for Bitcoin in a specific country. Online exchanges, which is where the large majority is traded, don’t publish country specific data.
3/ Coin Dance aggregates LocalBitcoins data but still misses important features such as volumes in USD, demographic breakdown and weighting by population. So that’s where I step in. Thank you @CarpeNoctom for the inspiration.
