Having now spent two full time days wrestling with old floppy disks to try to save some data for a dev's family...wow I hate floppy disks, and wow imaging them is complicated as hell, and WOW am I glad I know people like @Foone and @Artemio
@Foone @Artemio So far I have encountered FOUR different proprietary disk backup software suites that this one developer used, in the span of four years. None of them have tools online to extract with, heck, one doesn't even have the old TOOL online
@Foone @Artemio At least one of them writes its own proprietary disk format, so DOS looks at it and shrugs.
@Foone @Artemio And just to make it extra fun, Kryoflux just...stopped being recognized by Windows. I think I encountered an issue where I stopped the head in a weird place when I didn't like how it was reading the disk, and now it's stuck.

Hey! Now that this is official for sale, here's a couple notes re: this thing and the non-profit I run, @GameHistoryOrg

1. There is no way we (or the game museums) are going to afford this

2. Even if we could, we could do way more important preservation work with that money
This thing is cool but ultimately at the end of the day, it's just something to put on a pedestal and gawk at. Meanwhile over here we've got terabytes of important data stuck on rotting media, thousands of developers with stuff in their garage we should be traveling to, etc.
Good question! But impossible to answer because in the world of video games there hasn't been an item of this scale available for sale before. For other museums, sure, plenty of precedent for very rich people gifting expensive pieces of history.

I've got some problems with it, but Videogaming Illustrated is by far my favorite video game magazine from the early days. As Jess points out, this issue has 15 pages dedicated to representation of women in games...in 1983!
It also has some fun guest editorials, like one where Adam West argues for the artistic merit of video games (he's also like "now of course *I* don't play them, but")

Izuku is the adopted child in an old traditional witch family. He has shown enough talent to learn everything from very young, and he's barely 18 when he opens his own shop for magic crafts and medicines.

The second thing that actually made Izuku move without thinking was the blood.

Also on the agenda tonight: A check-in on CU South, an update on online petitioning (it's still not happening quickly) and a council discussion of use tables and the opportunity zone moratorium.
They won't be deciding anything tonight, nor is there a public hearing. Both those things will happen Aug. 27.

I have had PDs mentor grad students. It's important to check with both to make sure the mentoring is going well. Also let the student know the PD won't write the letter of Rec if the student doesn't want that.
Also, to any PD who abuses students this way: you suck. Stop. Never joke to an international student about deportation. It's not funny, ever. If you are someone who sees this behavior, don't encourage it, and if possible, report it.
Student 15: I felt that my MS advisor was verbally abusive. I frequently felt like a failure and it made it so that I was scared to go to him if something went wrong. Which of course made him more mad. 1/3
