It's either disaster by design or disaster by accident.

"If so, there is every chance that it will unintentionally lead us to disaster. Alternatively, it knows exactly what it is doing, the cluelessness is a smokescreen, and disaster is actually the plan"
We shouldn't underestimate the government's incompetence.

My position is that the government knows brexit will go badly. In order to hide this, they are distracting the opposition with attacks on the liberal world order - BBC, judiciary, immigrants etc.
This is also why they don't refer to Brexit any more, or "no deal".

They know it will be bad - by design or by accident. So the role of government isnow to cover it up.
When the economy of a totalitarian regime collapses, the tyrant leader doesn't say "oh well, better resign then - this is unsustainable now that economic ruin is unmistakably upon us".
Instead they leverage their influence on the media and the rest of government to explain why this economic ruin isn't their fault. Erdogan's Turkey or Venezuela are cases in point.
The UK government will simply blame the EU for the effects of Brexit.

And their nationalistic base will lap it up.
