Since I’ve heard this confusion from many people, let’s clarify it:

Aadhaar is NOT a proof of citizenship. Like PAN, Aadhaar can be issued to any foreigner who resides legally in India for over 180 days.

Indian citizenship laws are messed up.

The only way to determine Indian citizenship is through the date of birth of the person (or their parents) if the birth happens on Indian soil.

All documents are auxiliary so long as they prove this date of birth (of the applicant or their parents) depending on the year.

PS: In India, being a voter or being issued a passport happens purely on a self-declaration basis. Your DOB is used to ascertain your Indian nationality.

This is why NRC is dangerous. For the 1st time, it puts the onus of proving citizenship on people with no clear laws.
