The #covid19 virus is more contagious than previously thought

“Quarantine and contact tracing of symptomatic individuals alone may not be effective and early, strong control measures are needed to stop transmission of the virus.”

medrxiv.org/content/10.110…
It is believed that the #covid19 virus can be spread before the first symptoms appear. See the following for references:

nejm.org/doi/full/10.10…
jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/…
Combined with the fact that the incubation period (the period between the initial infection and the first symptoms) can vary from 2-14 days, this leaves plenty of room for #covid19 to spread without anyone suspecting

cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

folkhalsomyndigheten.se/the-public-hea…
Additionally, there is the risk of reinfection and thus retransmission of the #covid19 virus

reuters.com/article/us-chi…

nytimes.com/2020/02/29/hea…
Finally, there is a real possibility that the #covid19 virus is airborne meaning that:

“(...) tiny droplets remaining in the air could cause disease in others even after the ill person is no longer near.”

hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditi…
The above would explain why China has been disinfecting large areas with disinfectant spray, releasing it in the air to fight #covid19

As the #covid19 virus may last from a few hours up to several days in all sorts of surfaces, it also helps explain why spraying disinfectant to surfaces in the public area could help prevent further spread.

who.int/news-room/q-a-…
On top of all the above, the #covid19 virus is significantly deadlier to older age groups

bbc.com/news/world-asi… Image
Furthermore, a high percentage of those infected with #covid19 require some sort of intensive care

“20% of patients require hospital treatment
20–32% of patients hospitalised required intensive care for respiratory support”

cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…

weekly.chinacdc.cn/en/article/id/…
Coupled with the fact that it is projected that 40 to 70% of the population may contract the #covid19 virus ...

theatlantic.com/health/archive…
... this means there is a real risk of existing healthcare provider services being overrun, as was the case in China (wsj.com/articles/how-c…), and now in Italy (abcnews.go.com/Health/wireSto…) and Iran (rudaw.net/english/middle…)
The absolute most optimistic case for a #covid19 vaccine would only be during June or August of this year nasdaq.com/articles/moder…
According to retired nurse Dr. John Campbell, 2-3 months community transmission of #covid19 to peak, then 2-3 months more, that would place Europe on dire straits until September perhaps

The USA seems particularly vulnerable to the spread of #covid19 as well
I suspect a lot of countries will start getting nervous with the spread of #covid19, leading to reluctance in exporting medication (reuters.com/article/us-hea…) or outright seizing (reuters.com/article/us-hea…)

A lot of people have critized the @WHO for not declaring #covid19 a pandemic, but in this article there are good arguments defending such decision newscientist.com/article/223534…
One of the biggest uncertainties about #covid19 is the fatality. WHO has claimed a 3.4% fatality...

who.int/dg/speeches/de…
...which would put it much higher than the 1918 influenza pandemic (2%). However, 2% mortality rate killing the youngest and healthiest of us vs 3.4% killing the frailest of us, when they represent a much bigger % of the population is a very very different comparison.
And the numbers for #covid19 are likely severely under-reported, which could bring the fatality lower. Already we see promissing signs of this in China
Regardless of the biological and health implications of #covid19, the economic impacts are very real bbc.com/news/business-… and I would expect them to worsen as we approach the peak outbreak around the late spring/early summer
One of Dr. John Campbell's (youtube.com/user/Campbellt…) arguments for #covid19 is that the more proactive we are, the more we can delay and flatten the bell curve of cases, so the warmer temperatures can aid us, and the hospitals are less overwhelmed as the cases are distributed...
... as well as buy time for more effective screening, testing, and vaccine development. However, the current signs indicate that neither Europe nor USA (or the rest of the world) are being proactive nor planning for it. Something that was already predicted by the WHO itself Image

It's now been 1 year since I first started taking this pandemic seriously. And unfortunately I am even more concerned now than I was in 2020.
The lack of a global coordinated response (NPIs, therapeutics and vaccines) and people doing a mix of prevention and carelessness results in precisely the selection pressures that turns SARS-cov-2 into a hell the likes of which this biosphere has never experienced
We have a rapidly mutating virus with partial escape strains, a huge animal reservoir to hide in, emerge from, and adapt to different immune systems, at the same time unrest and misinformation/denial grows, with people expecting the current vaccines to end it all.

1/5
I'd like to reinforce the positive message of @mvankerkhove despite all the current defeatism around us

Personally, it often feels like a waste of time to voice my own opinion and concerns of the pandemic, when it seems everyone is declaring it over
2/5
Speaking against the herd mentality might not change any one individual opinion in that moment, but it keeps them remembering that not everyone agrees. And that by itself plants the seed of doubt that might someday be enough to get them to take this pandemic seriously
3/5
The more we give up and let their GBD/"let it rip" narrative play out, the more others that might be on the fence might just go along with the GBDers. Speak up, don't stay quiet. Voice your concerns which come from reason and science
4/5
I am also tempted to be silent and let everyone go on a self destructive path.

However, history is on our side, even if it looks hopeless, even if we are the minority. Because we will highlight that their "silent consensus" is fictitious
5/5
I know, it's draining and frustrating. But keep trying.
Different arguments, different examples, different gestures, tones of voice, sources, whatever can make the infection slow down ever so slightly by making someone else reconsider the official let it rip narrative
