Exactly a year ago on 3/8/2019, I jumped on the @ewarren train. I just wanted to help in whatever way I could - I’d even take out their trash if that’s what they needed. I’ve come away a better person, a lot fuller both in my heart and my circle of friends. #ThankYouElizabeth
I'd never done organizing on this scale & I’ve now had to learn how to use illustrator, slack, zoom, all the vol tools, and yes, even Twitter. (Still can’t do Instagram) The past few days have been an emotional rollercoaster. But I figured this is the time to say a few things.
In 2016 I had a lot of regrets because I didn’t get involved early enough and by the time I did, it was too late. This time I have no regrets because I've given it my all. I do have a lot of anger, sorrow, but ultimately, also hope. #ThankYouElizabeth
Anger: WHAT MORE COULD SHE HAVE DONE!? She had 80+bril plans, did 100+THs, took 100k+selfies, did tons of media avails, crushed every debate, & made sure to talk to embeds everyday, even when it was hard. It’s as if competency didn’t matter. She was awarded #WarrenMediaBlackout
Anger: WHAT MORE COULD WE HAVE DONE!? Our vols made/knocked/sent MILLIONS of calls/doors/texts. I spent about 50+hrs volunteering for most of the past year & a lot of people spent obscene numbers of hrs organizing. It’s was if field didn’t matter & didn’t move the needle at all.
Anger: Everyone LOVED her. All we heard while vol was “oh I adore her & think she’d be the BEST president but I’ll vote for___b/c I think he’s more___.” This frustration is from what we hear from ppl irl, not what’s happening online. Who/what were these ppl hearing? The pundits.
Sadness: Our volunteers were the most amazing group of people you could ever find. They were kind, gracious, thoughtful, and persistent. We had a phone bank on WEDNESDAY night after ST & NEW volunteers showed up. They worked SO hard and it killed me to see their hearts so broken.
Sadness: The youngest among us, some just turning 18, were looking forward to voting for their first woman president, who happened to be the best candidate, & they were crushed when, after a month of hard work getting her on the ballot, they’d not have the chance to vote for her.
Sadness: From NV caucus vol: we discovered 90% of the nonpartisan DNC vols were EW supporters. DNC needed vols to make sure the caucus succeeded & Iowa didn't happen in NV so ppl won't lose faith in democracy, so we signed up to help...
...So we did and the caucus site and tech ran well. We did this at the cost of people being able to fight for Warren in the precinct caucuses. Because like Warren, we prioritize the general good...perhaps to her detriment.
Sadness: From a vol: went to a party last night with warren vols & staffers and it was so fun - we were playing games and laughing so much and not talking about EW... then when I walked out the door I shouted DREAM BIG! And without missing a beat everyone shouted FIGHT HARD!😭💔
Sadness (anger?): My brain and heart aligned for a candidate for the first time. We built a family on this campaign, a good, kind family. And now it’s all over because America couldn’t deal with even the perfect candidate if she was lacking a Y chromosome.
Hope: I was invited to a @nyc_teens dinner. They were not only AWARE of the sexism & injustices in the world, but they were unafraid of calling it out. Yes, sadly it’s even pervasive in what’s supposed to be a more “aware” generation, but at least they’re seeing it AND naming it.
Hope: They also told me I was their personal EW b/c I empowered them to form their chapter. I didn’t question whether they could do it, I just said do it & LMK if they need anything. Know the power you have. A simple “sure you can do it!” may be more important than you know.
Hope: Right after news broke that EW was suspending her campaign, my friend in OH called me & we commiserated (really just sobbed). While we were talking, her phone started blowing up w/ her EW slack org group already making plans to adopt senate races and push for EW’s vision.
Hope: The field groups in NYC are already meeting to see what the next steps are and what fights are they want to take up. This is happening across the US with Warren groups/supporters. The work continues. The movement of Warren Democrats is coming and I can’t wait to see it.
Hope: The EW family is temporarily separated, but we are still in the same righteous fight. The friends & networks that we’ve built through this movement will remain, and people have been activated through a movement of love and hope. We will be ok in the end. #ThankYouElizabeth
Hope: Be kind & give. You don’t know someone’s lived experience. Keep an open mind & heart & listen, like EW, & make space for them to thrive in their own way & on their own time. You’ll get more than whatever you give. That was especially true of this "pay it forward" campaign.
In the end, my heart is so full of gratitude because of the people I’ve met on this campaign and the miracle that someone like Elizabeth Warren exists… and that somehow we were lucky enough to share her timeline. #ThankYouElizabeth
P.S. My platform map is now updated with ALL of EW’s plans and avail for download via link in my bio. The spreadsheet is also updated w/ her plans and many articles. I am comforted by the fact that she won’t stop fighting. She’ll always have my heart and time. #ThankYouElizabeth
