In March 1942, 33-year-old Anne Miller lay near death in a Connecticut hospital, her body ravaged with a burning fever for weeks. She had developed septicemia, or blood
2. poisoning, following a miscarriage. Doctors tried every known treatment, and in a last-ditch effort to save her life, decided to gamble on a new experimental drug called penicillin.

The government released nearly half of its entire supply – roughly a tablespoon.
3. Within a day, Anne’s temperature returned to normal and she was on the road to recovery. Anne became the first American treated with penicillin.
