I’m really worried people aren’t taking #coronavirus seriously enough. Comments from friends and how busy it is in town make me think that a lot of people are going about their lives as normal.

THIS IS A THREAD ON WHAT YOU NEED TO DO 1/ CORONAVIRUS: What you need to do
YOU NEED TO STAY AT HOME AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE, STARTING TODAY. IT WILL LITERALLY SAVE LIVES.

Work from home if you can. Try to shop less often. Don’t go to the pub. Don’t get a haircut. Don’t use public transport if you can avoid it, try to go when it’s less busy if you have to.
If you feel even a tiny bit ill—a slight temperature, a small cough, any aches—STAY AT HOME FOR SEVEN DAYS.

Try to avoid other members of your household too so you don’t infect them. The Government’s guidance on self-isolation is very helpful: gov.uk/government/pub…
WASH YOUR HANDS.

Soap and water are very effective at destroying coronavirus. Alcohol gel with > 60% alcohol is good too, but second-best compared to good old soap. 4/
These two simple things will reduce the spread of the virus. At the moment, every infected person infects 2–4 other people. If you can reduce the number of people you see in a day by half, you can reduce this number. 5/
If you can reduce it by three-quarters, or 90%, we’re really getting somewhere. If we can all reduce the number infected to less than one person per infected person, THE VIRUS WILL STOP SPREADING. 6/
The Government’s advice is based on the idea that people will get bored of constantly avoiding public places and not seeing their friends. They’re right—this will be really hard for all of us. But you know what else is really hard? Friends and relatives dying. 7/
If you can sustain it, you personally can save lives.

If you’re reading this and you’re under 50, you might not be worried about your own health because #COVID19 probably just means a week in bed feeling crappy. 8/
But it’s not about you being infected. It’s about the chain of infection you might start. You go to work, you infect your boss, she infects her sister, her sister infects their 80-year-old dad who ends up on intensive care and dies. 9/
Staying at home will LITERALLY save lives.

Please do what you can.

The only change is that the guidelines for self-isolation are now more stringent. If you live alone and get ill, self-isolate for seven days as before—but, if you live with anyone else, THE WHOLE HOUSEHOLD SHOULD SELF-ISOLATE FOR FOURTEEN DAYS.
