School didn’t teach you how to write online.

Here’s how writing online is different from what you learned. in school.

1. Distractions are everywhere: 90% of writing well is not getting distracted by the Internet. Put your phone away. Turn off the Internet. Focus on the words.
2. Grammar doesn’t matter.

When I was in school, I had terrible grammar and spelling. Still do. But auto-correct and advanced software solved my problem. If I make a mistake, the computer will instantly correct it for me. School is built for the age of handwriting.
3. Remote work rewards people who write well.

When you work on the computer instead of an office, you spend less time in meetings and more time writing long-form. Less voice, more text. People who write well can think well.

If you want to improve your writing, start by becoming a better note-taker.

Here are 10 ways to do that:

1. Save only the best notes: Don't hoard information. Save your top 5-10% of ideas only. That way, you can trust that everything in your note-taking system is high-quality.
2. Create evergreen notes.

Like a good investment, the benefits of your note-taking system should compound in value. Save ideas that will stay relevant for many years. Read the classics, skip the news. Note-by-note, brick-by-brick you’ll build an intellectual Coliseum.
3. Publish regularly.

Writing more is the fastest way to improve your note-taking system. Without the pressure to produce, your system will become messy. The pressure to produce will turn your note-taking system into an extension of your mind.

My Twitter account is more valuable than my college diploma.

These are the best things I've learned about using this wonderful platform:

1. If you want to build an audience, help people. Teach them and entertain them. Share what you learn and make your followers smarter.
2. Who should you follow?

When you follow somebody, you're giving them permission to brainwash you with their ideas. Skip Twitter's recommendations. Follow interesting people instead of politicians, publications, or celebrities. If somebody is bothering you, unfollow them.
3. How can you build your audience?

Tweet consistently, find your niche, and write the best reply to viral tweets. Rely on big nodes in the network for distribution by writing what they'll re-tweet. You can tag big names, but being spammy will destroy your credibility.

I'm already nestled in the Hamilton County Commission chambers for today's meeting. Commissioners are expected to to vote on the FY 2020 county budget today - or an alternative.

The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. but chambers already had about two dozen folks in here when I arrived about 15 minutes ago. I've seen several educators mixed in the crowd including some of @hamcoschools chief officers and principals.
The @TimesFreePress has covered this eyar's budget process extensively since Superintendent Bryan Johnson unveiled the schools $443 million budget request in April.

1/n For those who missed out on #Mello2018 - have decided to compile some thoughts from the talks and the cos. Some very successful investors in attendance; investing is about stacking the odds in your favour (like poker) and repeatedly playing to leverage your edge.
2/n If you don’t have an edge then you’re liquidity for someone else who has one. Investing and trading require patience and to wait for the opportunity. Losses reduce both physical and mental capital. You need to play to win but if you lose all your capital you can’t play.
3/n Gervais Williams - lack of wage growth changing political and investing landscape. Tailwinds will become headwinds as rates potentially rise and productivity stagnates. Risk comes from real world. Imo we are drunk on cheap credit; previous tax shields will become burdens.
