an overarching failure of the US response is it's taken leaders way too long to switch from Economic Brain to Public Health Brain

No mayor would tell his citizens as a Cat-5 hurricane descends on the town: "this gonna be hard for our bars, everyone go out and have 1 last shot"

The clear lesson of the 1918 pandemic is that early and aggressive interventions BOTH saved lives AND set up the economy for a stronger rebound afterwards.

“Save lives or save GDP” is a false choice.

Actually it’s worse. It frames a coherent strategy as some kind of paradox.

New paper on the 1918 influenza finds that cities that were most aggressive about banning public gatherings and other “non-pharmaceutical interventions” BOTH reduced deaths AND saw faster growth after the pandemic
"In the year after the 1918 Flu Pandemic, there is an uptick in banking assets in cities with early and longer interventions after '18. The effect is statistically significant and economically sizable...

"The economy performed better in areas with more aggressive interventions."

Denmark has led the world in its economic response to the coronavirus: Freeze the economy and pay ppl and firms to hold their breath.

I would summarize like this:

Denmark is essentially building a second unemployment benefit program, one which is paid through employers to workers who (a) stay home and (b) stay with the company.

It's jobless benefits, for people with jobs. It's furlough financing.
The virtues of this policy are obvious:

It helps people survive, reduces unemployment, preserves the "productive capacity" of both firms and workers, and sets the country up for a faster recovery ... IF they also quickly solve the health crisis.

Boghossian is so filled with spite and hate for departments that have nothing to do with him that he and his buddies concocted a spiteful hoax meant only to humiliate people that, I cannot reiterate enough, did nothing to him. Despite all this….
Boghossian has the nerve to accuse anyone else of “grievance studies”. Let’s be clear: Someone in this situation has a ridiculous grievance they shouldn’t have that they are wasting their life away on. It’s Boghossian.

On the contrary, I’d say it’s the only explanation that really makes sense.
Again, as @maddow pointed out last night, Trump has a long habit of parroting downright obscure talking points that come straight from Putin, often referencing countries he probably didn’t even know existed.
And, as Chait himself notes, this comes right as Russia is about to declare they were always right to invade Afghanistan.

And Trump has already been caught trying to backchannel with Putin:
