2/ Over the weekend, around 3/4 of respondents to the poll below said they sometimes felt uncomfortable asking learners directed questions while facilitating report:
3/ Cause of discomfort was a tie between not wanting to appear like “pimping,” and avoiding calling learners out.
4/ Asking ?s is a 🔑 component to report facilitation. Hopefully the next few tweets will help you:
🔑 Appreicate benefits of the direct ?
🔑 Avoid the ? axis of evil
🔑 Utilize Blooms Taxonomy to frame ?s appropriate for your learners
🔑 Define the “warm” call Image
5/ Benefits of the Direct Question - The direct question has great power in resident report. A few purposes of the direct question are below.

What others can you think of? Image
6/ Avoid the ? Axis of Evil (coined by @doc_connors )

⭐️ The socratic method and “pimping” are not the same.

⭐️ Similarly, avoid yes/no questions. Think: What, why, how

⭐️ Ask your learners level-appropriate ?s (see next) Image
7/ Choose ? type - Bloom’s taxonomy is a helpful framework when deciding what kind of ? to ask.

Base of pyramid:⬇️order, ⬇️time to answer, also ⬇️retention.

Top of pyramid:⬆️order, ⬆️time to answer, typically for advanced learners

All types should be used @ various times ImageImage
8/ HOW you ask the ?s also matters.

Whenever possible, WARM CALL learners before your ? - prime them that you are about to ask them to answer a ?

Works for individuals. Esp good for priming microgroups during breakouts to start sharing once back in a large group Image
9/ Other important parts of the HOW include:

- Direct eye contact
- An encouraging smile
- Expectation setting up front. Tell learners you will ask ?s not for the sake of pimping, but to make sure you are teaching @ the right level & helping guide their thought process
10/ The other discomforts:

I will get to what to do about SILENCE and ENGAGING all learners, including the “introverts,” in later tips.

12/ What will you try differently with your questions for your next report?

And would love to hear other tips that you’ve seen work well re asking questions effectively. Please share them below!
