I’ve been focusing on #Pakistan and #CPEC recently, but wanted to tell you all about this article on #India that @WilfriedSwenden and I published recently. In it we assess Lijphart’s claim that India should be coded as consociational 1/n. rdcu.be/b0eGR/n
Wilfried and I aren't the first ones to do this but we use new data, some from @TCPD_Ashoka to assess power sharing in #India in relation to #religion #caste, #territory and #language 2/n
In relation to the Union #Cabinet we find that #Muslims are under-represented according to their proportion of the population and that this is getting worse 3/n #India Deviation from proportionality in Indian cabinet based on religion 1947-2018
In the Indian cabinet we also find that #OBCs are under-represented compared to their proportion of the population 4/n Deviation from Proportionality in Indian Cabinet 1947-2018 based on caste
We have also tabulated the positions that religious minorities have held in the Indian Cabinet (I'm very proud of this) between 1947-2018 5/n #India #religion Religious Breakdown of Indian Cabinet Positions held by religious minorities 1947-2018
When we turn to positions in the #INC Working Committee we show that although Christians and Sikhs have generally been over-represented compared to their proportion of the population, Muslims have been under-represented despite the INC's secular credentials 6/n #India Composition of Congress Working Committee by religion 1952-2018
Unsurprisingly, the #BJP's National Executive over-represents Hindus compared to their percentage of the population 7/n #India BJP's National Executive 1983-2018 by religion.
Using data from @TCPD_Ashoka we show that #Muslims & #OBCs are under-represented in the #LokSabha compared to their proportion of the population, and that higher castes are over-represented 8/n #India #caste Deviation from proportionality in the religious composition of the Lok Sabha 1952-2014
When we turn to the civil service we find that OBCs are still under-represented according to their share of the population despite the #Mandal report 9/n OBC under-representation in central government jobs in India in comparison to their proportion of the population
Our data in this article clearly bears out that minority groups in #India, other than dominant minority groups such as upper caste Hindus are not systematically co-governing the centre as part of a Grand Coalition 10/n
Key groups, in particular #OBCs and #Muslims remain under-represented in relation to their share of the population, be it in senior political, administrative or judicial offices. 11/n #India
Of course, there are state level variations, and this is where we would encourage more research as our paper concentrates only on the national level of #India 12/12
