Hey Lord Ashcroft,

WW2 Historian here! Thought I'd helpfully correct some of your misconceptions about wartime when you're casually doing some generational baiting :)

As you clearly need a refresher!

So lets begin! /1
#WW2 #SWW #History
1. Given the iconic YCNY poster relates more to WW1, it'd be pretty old hat to WW2 gen. It'd be like using a boomer-meme like this one to engage them!

2. Lots of people wanted more action on air raids! A common gripe! See Belfast for a case study on lack of action. /2
3. There were shortages of sirens and such, so in some communities it was tricky and other measures had to be adopted. Some people also ignored restrictions! Think of that, people being people. Grrr people.

4. We did alter things for different religions/denominations. /3
4 (pt 2). We had to respect different beliefs given our societal underpinnings & incidents like the Indian Mutiny highlighting need to understand concerns. Different foods/religious holidays etc all catered for!

5. People lamented short rationing short comings. Curse them! /4
5 (pt 2). See extensive Civil Affairs material on problems encountered when we failed to meet different societies' essential needs! Could get messy.

6. We had race riots in Britain! US/UK relations between troops were often strained at a local level by racism. /5
7. Soldiers griped about a decent walking out uniform, esp griping lack of a collar and tie! So we eventually altered regs in late '44! Damn underpaid soldiers wanting to look good!

8. Stockpiles... oh my, see the huge rows about lack of kit around 1939 - 1941! /6
So I hope this highlights that such genbait memes really serve to just... underline that people are much the same!

All the best,

Jonathan
