Trying to make sense of the #COVID19UK crisis isn’t easy...but don’t give up!

Our team of dedicated researchers have put together a flow chart showing some main errors:

* Poor preparation

* Late modelling

* Poor risk management

* Lack of testing data

These newly released documents sent to SAGE on 25/3 show a shocking spike of hospital admissions rising exponentially in 1st week of March.

When SAGE & COBR met on 2 & 3 March would they have known this?

When did @neilfergusson flag NHS capacity issues? twitter.com/messages/media…
This report 👆was delivered to SAGE by the #COVID19 Clinical Information Network (CO-CIN) which collates clinical information around hospital #coronavirus admissions of in the UK.

One of their members is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Professor Van Tam, who is a SAGE member.
Bringing in lockdown just ONE WEEK earlier could have prevented three-quarters of UK deaths, modelling suggests.

The glow chart👆shows SAGE was aware of the spike in cases on 1/3.

Modelling by @tomaspueyo had shown the exponential rise each day R is >2.

This was the govt’s top modeller on #C4News on 14/3.

Asked if lockdown measures should be imposed, he replies: “No...For what gain?”

Lockdown wasn’t introduced for another 9 days.

Two days earlier @peston had revealed the govt’s herdimmunity strategy.👇
Herd immunity makes sense as an outcome but NOT as a strategy.

But @Peston wrote: “The STRATEGY of the UK govt is to allow the virus to pass through the entire population so that we acquire herd immunity.”

Some argue herd immunity is still the strategy.
The UK was given the biggest gift any country could have had in the circumstances: a two-month head start.

That’s if we’d taken the warning from Wuhan.

If we’d taken the warning from Italy we would have still had a 3-week head start. #COVID19 #Covid19UK
It’s generally agreed that lockdown should’ve been introduced earlier, but this isn’t the time for blame.

It’s a time for honesty, transparency & making sure we follow the right policies now: on testing properly, tracing, isolating,lockdown, masks etc.👇
Looking at the mistakes made over the past 3 months is ONLY important in order for us to gain an understanding of what the govt’s strategy is.

Bizarre as it sounds, it is clear if you read this thread👇that some of the “mistakes” were actually deliberate.
