People stuck in traffic are witnessing NYPD beat up folks on their way home.
This was sent to me by a friend of the women in the car, @tommiesunshine. Stuck in traffic for nearly an hour on 50th street and third Ave.
Ridiculously, @CNN and @donlemon are interviewing the #Nypd chief and they are saying that protestors started the beatings at the brooklyn bridge. So what is this??? People running through the streets away from cops.
An 8pm curfew means that the @NYCMayor just took away all the income and wages of everyone who works past 8pm. Which is half this city. I’m sure that’s a greater loss of money than any looting in nyc.
There is no way that #NYC will abide or survive an 8pm curfew. It’s a recipe for total disaster. It will lead to more violence and more unrest.

The @NYCMayor needs to go to @barclayscenter with the heads of city council and sit down with the leaders of #BlackLivesMatter ASAP
We need a fundamental overhaul of the #NYPD. And we need a fundamental overhaul of #NYC.

We need economic, racial and environmental justice in this city. It is long overdue.

Bill- come out from hiding and listen to us. We need to reshape this city.
It is so sad. I was born in New York City. We used to innovate and lead.

Now we are fodder for Wall Street hatchet men and violent white supremacists.

We need to take back this city.

We can do it.
I actually think we are doing it. Right now. I don’t think these protests are going away. Summer just started. This is just getting started.
Dear @NYCMayor and @NYGovCuomo (and all mayors and governors in the USA)- if you are against police brutality then why is your response more police brutality???

This makes no sense.

You need to sit down with #BlackLivesMatter and community leaders and make changes NOW!
It is beyond ridiculous that the response to these protests is to use the cops and the carceral state. This needs peaceful negotiations. This needs deep dialogue.
This needs leadership.

What we get is tear gas, rubber bullets, beatings and gestapo tactics.

It must end.
This is a real test of the idea of government at every level.

Can the government actually respond to this crisis with sanity?

Sanity would be immediate dialogue, immediate change.

This requires an immediate democratic response. Not the immediate state violence we are seeing.
New York could be a real leader here. If the gov’t could just respond with democracy and not brutality and authoritarianism.

When folks complain to you, is your response to hit them?
Abuse them?

I hope not.

This is the same.

We need real action and change.
It is possible.
Think about all the restaurant deliveries, the cooks, the uber drivers. The corner stores. All the folks who were serving a city that has a Primetime “non essential” economy between 8pm and midnight. That’s what I’m talking about. The grocery stores. The take out. All of it.
