Breaking - Chinese lawyer and democracy activist Ding Jia-Xi has confirmed to be arrested after being put under RSDL for almost six months since his arrest on December 26, 2019. His wife @luoshch just told me.
Ding is part of the group of pro-democracy figures who met up in Xiamen on December 13, 2019, and the group allegedly. talked about the future for #China. And since December 26, 2019, at least seven of them have been forced into disappearance.
Here is the official notice of his arrest, which states that he was charged with inciting subversion of state power on June 19, 2020.
But please keep in mind that Ding was already arrested on December 26, 2019 and he had been put under detention at an unknown location for the last six months. His family was unable to get any official update about his status as well as his whereabouts.
Then today, his family was finally "informed" that Ding "has been arrested." Again, this is #Beijing's typical way of handling law enforcement matters. They arrest anyone at any convenient time for them and ignore the family's rights to be informed about the situation.
After desperate family members begin to speak up publicly about the disappearance of their family members, the government would then issue a statement like the one above, trying to justify that the particular individual had "just" been arrested under a random crime.
I know I have repeated this so many times over the last few days, but the international community should pay very close attention to these cases. Ding is charged with a national security-related crime that is very likely going to be enforced in #HongKong as well.
With the pattern that #Beijing handles these "national security related cases," this case is a strong indicator that the Chinese government is likely not going to honor the actual content of the #NationalSecurityLaw, and only use the law to make it convenient for them to ...
... target activists, intellectuals or even scholars. Rather than upholding rule of law, #Beijing's behavior here should be viewed as an abuse of rule of law.
