Back for another huge protest night in downtown #Portland, where many hundreds are apparently marching to a nearby hotel, where it is believed the federal reinforcements have been staying. #PortlandProtests #pdx
So, apparently Oregon has a protest llama named Ceasar, “the no-drama llama,” who has been to 10 #BlackLivesMatter protests before tonight. Folks in the crowd are saying “stay by the llama and we won’t get gassed!” I hope they’re right! #PortlandProtests #KeepPortlandWeird
The crowd gathered at the downtown #Portland Marriott stretches around the corner and up several blocks, wall-to-wall. As the hotel where the DHS agents are believed to be staying came into view, the crowd began to chant, “Kick them out, Marriott!” #PortlandProtest
This gentleman is a regular at #PortlandProtests, where he plays traditional patriotic songs like The Star-Spangled Banner on a plastic trombone because, he says, “The right likes to co-opt symbols of America, but this is what America looks like. It’s our country, too.” #PDX
Back down by the federal courthouse in #PDX and holy wow look at all these people. The air is already spicy, with a hint of firework smoke. The #WallOfMoms is pushing through to the front, where veterans with the #WallOfVeterans is already stationed. #PortlandProtests
You can hear the hum of leaf blowers all over this crowd. Read my latest on the leaf-blower wars happening nightly in downtown #PDX as the federal agents set off rounds of tear gas for many hours in a row, night after night: washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07…
This is the #WallOfVets, standing in parade rest at the front of the line in downtown #PDX, right outside the reinforced metal fence around the federal courthouse, on which someone has hung an upside down American flag — a signal of distress. #PortlandProtest
We now have a tree full of box fans hanging at the park right accross from the federal courthouse here in #Portland. The park is home to Riot Ribs, an elaborate aid station that feeds anyone who asks. Keeping chemicals out has been an ongoing struggle. #PDXprotests
They’re flashing an angry face on the side of the federal courthouse and chanting, “I don’t see no riot here, why are you in riot gear?” And “Feds go home!” After midnight and still hundreds of people here. #PortlandProtest
A lull in the tear gas means... bubbles. #PortlandProtests
The feds have moved back inside the courthouse for a moment, and in their absence, folks are starting back in on the fence. They’ve been shaking it, pulling at it, trying to tear it down for days. #PortlandProtests
I left the scene about an hour ago to make an early interview tomorrow, but please follow this #Portlandprotest thread from @MrOlmos to see what happens after protesters got parts of the fence down tonight. 👇🏽
