This 🧵 is about the @DNC's platform vote on cannabis and why I will not back down in my support of legalization even though my Party did not vote in favor of legalization.

On July 27, the @DNC voted against an amendment to its official 2020 policy platform. This amendment would've supported the legalization of medicinal & recreational cannabis across the country; however, it was sharply rejected with a sweeping 50-106 vote.

Now that the @DNC Convention is set to begin next week, on August 17, I felt it pertinent to speak out against this vote which I feel is not reflective of many members of the Democratic Party, nor of many candidates who are running on the Democratic ticket this fall. #Cannabis
The @pewresearch published data in November 2019 showing that a majority of Americans believe cannabis should be legal. Moreover, Pew found that, "Nearly eight-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (78%) say marijuana use should be legal.”

Legalization is what Democrats across the country want; not what a few select out-of-touch members of the @DNC platform committee voted for, and I want to make that clear to the voters who are listening to the messages we are sending them before they cast their ballots this fall.
Our campaign for North Carolina Commissioner of Agriculture has unapologetically supported cannabis legalization from day one.

Cannabis has immense potential to increase economic opportunities for our farmers and generate tax revenue—allowing the state to invest more resources in inadequately funded public services, including public education.

Not only that, but #cannabis could serve as an economic driving force for our rural communities that are being left behind. This rejection by the @DNC not only comes with an economic loss, but a social one as well.
Communities of color have been disproportionately criminalized on #cannabis possession charges, an issue that deserves to be acknowledged and addressed by policymakers through decriminalization and dismissal of past misdemeanor possession charges.
Policymakers could pursue intentional efforts to create an equitable cannabis industry which fosters the participation of Black farmers and historically underutilized businesses (HUBs) for distribution of products.

This campaign believes in doing the right thing for all North Carolinians, regardless of whether the stance is popular in Raleigh or in Washington, D.C. This is a campaign rooted in the needs of everyday North Carolinians.

We will continue working towards achieving greater fiscal growth and equity for North Carolina and her people, regardless of whatever stance others may take, and that includes the @DNC.

It’s important that the people who are counting on us to stand up and speak out on this issue know that I will not stay silent just because I have a “D” behind my name on the ballot.

My Party, the @DNC, has unfortunately decided to resist necessary change and progress that could deliver a vital economic lifeline and social justice opportunity to so many who are hurting throughout this country, especially during these difficult and uncertain times. #cannabis
I remain steadfast in my commitment to fight for the legalization of cannabis in this state and hope that voters who support that vision join us in the fight for our future.
