.@ExpressNews claimed that they could not run the #HonestObit bc it included opinions, criticized elected officials, and editorialized; they stated it would detract from the journalistic integrity of the paper and offered to run it as a paid advertisement instead.
In hopes of compromise, we removed some of the stronger language as well as an invitation to a vigil, which the paper claimed was not the same as a funeral -- though as you'll see below, the @statesman clearly disagrees with this distinction.
But @ExpressNews was stuck on this: "His death was due to neglect of the Hispanic community by President Trump and Governor Abbott, who downplayed the virus, did not provide adequate testing and contact tracing, and littered the airways with mixed messages on how to remain safe."
Despite clear evidence for the veracity of this statement and offers to connect the editors directly to epidemiologists with expertise in this area, @ExpressNews refused to move forward.
After exhausting this avenue, @ExpressNews claimed that they could not run something that criticized elected officials. However, the above statement is fact; that it may reflect poorly on @GregAbbott_TX and @realDonaldTrump is an extrapolation based on this fact.
Finally, @ExpressNews tried claiming that obituaries may only state immediate cause of death. But this is far from the case - when someone dies "from cancer," ppl are allowed to list cancer as the cause and not something more specific like "multi-organ failure."
We asked if someone had died by homicide (proven in court), if "homicide" could be listed as cause of death instead of/in addition to "gunshot wound," "exsanguination," etc. Apparently this could be OK -- so there is no real requirement to list most immediate cause of death.
Finally, on its website and on ALL obituary submission instructions, the @ExpressNews has no guidelines or limitations published re: obituary content. In fact, they specifically state the only information they may need to vet is that the subject actually passed.
Given this info, @ExpressNew's refusal to run this #HonestObit appears to be politically motivated, discriminatory, and censorship.
Furthermore, the leading #Texas paper, @statesman, agrees with us and takes it one step further, stating that it's OK to politicize an obit...
"Those who object to the “politicization” of obituaries disregard the fact that many obituaries not only list the cause of death, but also have a public call to action...The #HonestObit trend makes visible this intersection of private life and public policy." -@statesman

"With an average of 500 people a day still dying from #Covid in the U.S. and countless more struggling with #LongCovid, this continues the federal government’s refusal to take the pandemic seriously, protect people, and listen to the Covid bereaved."
‼️FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Today, @WhiteHouse and the @HHSGov released reports laying out existing resources and plans to address long-term effects of #COVID19.
...the missing input from COVID bereaved and the lack of urgency around Long COVID–a condition affecting 1 in 5 Americans who have tested positive.
From @kdurquiza: “There is no federal plan to reckon with the 1 million + lives (and counting) lost to Covid-19. 👇🏾
People who lost loved ones to Covid put their trust in this Administration to respond to the pandemic with the full power of the federal government, but the feds are instead sweeping Covid deaths under the rug and into the memory hole as we did with the 1918 pandemic. 👇🏾
Thanks to @michelleko2d, MD-PhD -- #MarkedByCovid Advisor & Assistant Public Health Sciences Professor at @ucdavis -- for capturing some gems from today's Teach-In!
Sure, let’s keep using @CDCgov's calm green "Community Level" map that overemphasizes hospitalizations & deaths instead of the "Community Transmission" map that clearly demonstrates (high & growing!) infection rate.
That totally helps ppl make "informed decisions" about risk.🙄
In highly vaccinated #SanFrancisco, 7-day positivity & average daily case rates are growing significantly, despite decreased testing -- both are close to or above their highest levels throughout the entire of the pandemic, outside of the massive omicron surge.
Though @WhiteHouse@TheJusticeDept have appealed a court decision striking down federal mask mandates on public transit, they have not requested a "stay" to keep masks ON until a final verdict.
"The pandemic’s toll is no longer falling almost exclusively on those who chose* not to get shots, with vaccine protection waning over time...
[*Note: inaccurate language that blames victims; cultural & structural barriers to vaccination remain.]
...and the elderly and immunocompromised — who are at greatest risk of succumbing to #COVID19 even if vaccinated — having a harder time dodging increasingly contagious strains*."
[*Add: "and increased community spread due to decreased mitigation efforts like universal masking."]
