-Close to 1 billion people have a mental disorder
-Depression is a leading cause of illness & disability
-1 person dies every 40 seconds from suicide
-3 million people die every year due to harmful use of 🍻
Poor #mentalhealth has an impact on risk-taking behaviour in young people, including:
❌self-harm
❌use of tobacco, alcohol & drugs
❌risky sexual behaviours
❌exposure to violence
Health systems haven't yet adequately responded to the burden of mental disorders. In low- & middle-income countries, more than 75% of people with mental health conditions receive no treatment for their condition at all.
There is a lot we can do for our mental well-being:
🔹 generalist #healthworkers can be trained to provide #mentalhealth care
🔹 regular health checks of people with severe mental disorders can prevent premature death
DYK: the quality of life of people living with conditions such as autism and dementia can be greatly improved when their caregivers receive appropriate training.
#COVID19 has increased demand for #mentalhealth services.
Bereavement
Isolation
Loss of income & fear
are triggering mental health conditions or exacerbating existing ones.
Many people may be facing increased levels of alcohol & drug use, insomnia & anxiety. #MoveForMentalHealth

"One year ago, the nations of the world came together in solidarity to endorse the #UNGA Political Declaration on Universal Health Coverage"-@DrTedros#HealthForAll
"The day before that landmark event, the Global Preparedness Monitoring Board launched its first report, warning that the world was unprepared for the next pandemic, and that it was only a matter of when, not if the next pandemic struck"-@DrTedros#UNGA
#COVID19 is eroding decades of progress made towards universal health coverage.
We need to invest in stronger health systems now to ensure that everyone can access to health care without experiencing financial hardship.
We need to emerge stronger 💪 from #COVID19 to achieve #HealthForAll by:
✅Responding to the pandemic
✅Strengthening health systems
✅Boosting universal health coverage
✅Protecting people from future health threats
Universal Health Coverage:
-Enables people to make good health decisions
-Brings life-saving services to rural communities
-Builds networks to provide affordable, local treatment
-Provides more sophisticated services at hospitals
