𧡠on why you should be worried about Cummings ordering MPs to betray YOU by breaking Govt's manifesto pledge to uphold or even enhance our food, #AnimalWelfare & #Environment standards βplus why MPs should listen to you and vote for the Lords Amdts to the #AgricultureBillπ:
Let's look at the numbers:
92% of the British Public want current farm animal welfare standards to be maintained in trade negotiations with the US and other countries.
Why are we so keen on high #AnimalWelfare & #FoodStandards?
a) animals are sentient beings; they feel pain
b) low-welfare food = higher risk of human illness
c) meat from animals fed excessive antibiotics contributes to human antibiotic resistance
d) low standards = false economy
In their manifesto, on which they were elected, the Cons pledged to uphold or even ENHANCE food, animal welfare & environmental standards.
ENHANCE β lower by the back door of trade deals
They also pledged to walk away from any deal that lowered our standards.
56% of us have learnt from the industrial scale lying around Brexit, the COVID19 response & the *one rule for us, another for you plebs* mentality not to trust this govt to keep its word on #FoodStandards (of the other 44%, only 31% trust them).
It's hardly surprising that the majority doesn't trust this govt when 95% of us want to maintain current food standards, but Dominic Cummings orders Tory MPs to vote against the #AgricultureBill amendment that would enshrine them in law.
Who elected him?Why do Tory MPs obey him?
Here's something every Tory MP should bear in mind.
Dominic Cummings sometimes, often, gets things WRONG. This is one of those occasions.
Why burn through your political capital to vote against something that the British people want, to appease Cummings, who is wrong on this?
The only person who gets it more wrong than Dom, is Dan.
Hannan has had an epic pearl-clutching session in The Telegraph. *Think not of US industrial farms & their lamentable methods, but of smallholders in Kenya*
Brexit = no more 0-tariff/quota access to UK for 47 LDCs.
Oh
So what do we propose? Enshrine our high food, animal welfare & environmental standards in primary legislation, and prevent ministers from disapplying it for the sake of a trade deal that won't make us very much richer & carries hidden costs that outweigh the benefits. #FairTrade
And don't think you can avoid the risks of imported health problems and the shame of condoning low-welfare production methods through trade by becoming a vegan.
The Americans have found ways to poison the public through fruit & veg too!
Even if you're miffed with farmers over Brexit, or you've got a useless MP who always votes with the whip, write anyway. What ends up on your plate is too important not to.
#NFU Scotland is urging people, especially small farmers and crofters, to write to their MPs and to lobby them on the #AgricultureBill, but do not appear to have a letter template.
If like me you've already written to your MP, it won't hurt to do it again ahead of the vote:
"Parliament is sovereign. Please use your vote on #AgricultureBill amendments to protect public health, #AnimalWelfare & the #Environment. get the Govt to put safeguards in law.
cont.
Voters want it. Do not submit to front bench bullying, or to duress from unelected bureaucrats. Do not tolerate any denial of your vote on a technicality. Your constituents put you where you are and must come 1st."
For Tory MPs in *Rural 75* & *Rural 50* seats how you vote on #AgricultureBill Lords' Amdts will prove decisive in GE2024. Don't kid yourself we'll forget. 95% of the public back #SaveOurStandards.
(List of MPs in *R75* & *R50* seats in .@WCountryBylines catchment area follows)
Most MPs are well-intentioned & #BackBritishFarming, but the truth is, unless standards are enshrined in law, there is a high probability risk farming will be undermined. .@Keir_Starmer understands this.
.@trussliz thinks it's worth undermining our food, farming, animal welfare, countryside & Enviro standards to get trade deals, but has she weighed up the trade-offs? Trade deals gains are tiny compared to losses from trashing our standards βnot just Β£ losses.
@RussInCheshire I'm so sorry to hear about your mum. I must say, you're being remarkably stoic about it. I dare say you're in bits inside. Be kind to yourself. π
Meanwhile, don't worry about #TheWeekInTory. I've made some notes for you...
19AUG20: The 1st polar bear to be born in UK for 2yrs will move from its Scottish home to an English Park.
Hmm. That might make a good metaphor for something more political...
@RussInCheshire 1.#WorldHumanitarianDay began tragically when the body of a 16yr-old Sudanese refugee trying to cross the Channel with a friend in a dinghy rowed by shovels washed up on a French beach.
2.Priti Patel responded with invective against criminal gangs, bypassing compassion & concern
BILLIONS of Tax-payers' Β£ spaffed on dubious contracts to Palantir, Faculty, Serco, Sitel, Randox, Public First, Aventis, Pestfix, Ayanda, etc.
Why isn't Govt public procurement abuse + Towns Fund misallocation all over News & MSM newspapers? Extent of #GovtCorruption shocking!
If you're not up to speed on what Govt has been up to in procurement, using C19 *emergency measures* to bung taxpayers'Β£ to firms controlled by chums, often with negligible assets or relevant expertise Γ la ferryless ferry co, this is a good place to start theguardian.com/commentisfree/β¦
2. Johnson made his mismanagement of C19 in #CareHomes worse by BLAMING them for the high death toll βa mistake he's tried to row back from, but refuses to do the one thing that might help: apologise, even tho' Starmer gave him 3 opportunities to do so at #PMQs.
3. The Times announced Cummings will cut the UK's armed forces. One Tory backbencher (#TobiasEllwood)found his backbone & questioned *Why Dom?* Another(#MarkFranΓ§ois) took it as a cue to threaten a General he'd get Cummings on to him. Silence from DefenseSec...π
THE WEEK IN POLITICS #7MemesFor7Days of political immaturity, incompetence and idiocy βor is this evil by design?
1. Sunday: fall-out from Mikey Gove's Ditchley Lecture. Using reaching for FDR's greatness as cover, he revealed he wants radical experimentation without oversight.
2. Monday: a new, inane 3-word slogan (#BuildBuildBuild) to headline another lacklustre prime ministerial speech. A prelude to more broken promises, more taxpayers' Β£ down the drain & a dead cat to distract us from the merciless drive towards NO DEAL with the EU.
3. Tuesday: Johnson fulfilled the promise he made on 26June2016 that despite Brexit, we Brits wld still be able to live, study, work, buy property, set up a business & retire in the EU.
NOT REALLY! Rat-b*stard Cons voted to strip us Brits of #FreedomOfMovement.
