Supreme Court Bench headed by CJI SA Bobde begins hearing a PIL highlighting the issue of #stubbleburning taking place in states of #Punjab, #Haryana and #UttarPradesh.
SG Tushar Mehta: Central government has taken a holistic view and several ad hoc steps have been taken.

Central government is considering bringing a legislation on the issue which will put body in place with participants from all affected areas.

#SupremeCourt #StubbleBurning
CJI: Welcome step, this is something that government should have acted on. This is not a matter for PIL... The only issue is people are choking because of pollution and it is something which must be curbed.

Mehta: Must be curbed on war footing.
Mehta prays for the SC order of October 16 appointing a one man committee of Justice (retd) Madan Lokur to be kept in abeyance for now.

#SupremeCourt #stubbleburning
Amicus Curiae Harish Salve supported the proposal.

Counsel for petitioner, Senior Advocate Vikas Singh, objected; apprehended that the legislation will come only by next year to which SG kehta said, "This government acts fast"

#SupremeCourt #StubbleBurning
Supreme Court, however, kept its order of October 16 in abeyance till further orders.

SC to hear this matter next along with the MC Mehta case dealing with the issue of air pollution.
