The president has vast powers over executive agencies. But Tony Fauci is not a political appointee. In fact, he has been offered the head of @NIH & turned it down. He is a dedicated & decorated career government scientist. Trump is not his boss. @NIHDirector oversees NIH staff.
I know both Tony Fauci & Francis Collins. I am 100% sure Dr. Collins would never fire Dr. Fauci. The @NIHDirector serves at the pleasure of the President, so Trump could fire Collins & appoint a "yes man." Even then the @NIHDirector must be confirmed by the Senate.
Suppose a new @NIHDirector or @SecAzar fired Dr. Fauci? Even then it would have to be for cause, as senior civil service staff have employment protections. It would be contested & probably would not happen until the next administration, assuming Biden wins the election.
All this leads me to worry deeply for the future of our shining public health agencies, @NIH @CDCgov @US_FDA. Firing a civil servant who has served the nation under six presidents w/ unparalleled distinction would be a nightmare.
Even trying to fire Dr. Fauci would turn ph scientists into political fodder. It would marginalize America's shining health agencies, the envy of the world. And remember, Dr. Fauci is in charge of R&D for #COVID19 vaccines. I can't imagine the ramifications of such a ruinous move
