‘103 #Covid19 deaths in October, 39 of them in nursing homes’

.. almost 40% of all recent deaths from #Covid19, & almost 1/2 of all deaths in Ireland since start of pandemic, are in #nursinghomes 1/ irishtimes.com/news/health/co…
about 30,000 people live in nursing homes... so just 0.5% of the population have suffered 50% of #Covid19 fatalities

HSE attribute this to ‘high rates of community transmission’, but... 2/ irishtimes.com/news/ireland/i…
..elderly people & people with health conditions who live ~outside~ nursing homes ‘in the community’ do not have these infection rates

... & Dublin #nursinghomes have not allowed visitors for more than 6 weeks now 3/
moreover, international research says that there is

‘no scientific evidence that visitors to care homes introduced #COVID19 infections, however during the peak of pandemic most countries did not allow visiting’ ltccovid.org/2020/11/01/pre… 4/
.. but there’s research that points to why #nursinghomes are very high risk, & why #Covid19 infection was so high in spring & autumn

‘Outbreak of #COVID19 in a Nursing Home Associated With Aerosol Transmission as Result of Inadequate #Ventilationacademic.oup.com/cid/advance-ar… 5/
& the sciences of weather, ventilation, low humidity & virology confirm these ‘high risk’ conditions for residents in over-heated, dry air, under-ventilated rooms 6/
these specific conditions are easily preventable

..but HIQA/ HSE/ HPSC/ NPHET/ Dept Health don’t seem to have any prevention plan for clean safe indoor air, or any warnings to protect residents & staff

..it’s ‘wait & see’ 7/ hpsc.ie/a-z/respirator… & hiqa.ie/sites/default/…
Prevention of these high-risk indoor air conditions in #nursinghomes is easy, low cost & immediate 8/

WHO warns of high risk of #Covid19 spread ‘especially indoors in poor ventilation’ & says ‘open a window’

.. so why no risk prevention advice in Ireland’s public health plan.. nine months after this was warned about in many other countries?

[Thread] Covid19 & weather

Research from China points to Ireland being very high-risk for virus spread in winter months. This study linked Spring hot-spot outbreaks (yellow zone) at 5-11°C & low humidity 1/ #Covid19 jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman… Image
another study: ‘meteorological factors play independent role in #COVID19 transmission.. Local weather (low temp, mild diurnal temp range & low humidity) likely favor transmission.. each 1°C increase in [temp] related to decline of daily confirmed cases’ 2/ sciencedirect.com/science/articl…
‘Air temperature & humidity indicated to significantly influence transmission of COVID-19’.. the weather two weeks ago was correlated with confirmed new case counts.. epidemiological data were correlated with weather data 14 days ago’ 3/ medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

[Thread] Protecting yourself from viruses ‘is not just about ventilation, it’s about humidity in rooms’ -Dr @laoneill111 on @NewstalkFM #Covid19

& here’s why... 1/
In autumn conditions, as across Europe now, temperatures have dropped (10-15°C) people have moved indoors, heating is on & windows closed. #Covid19 cases have risen 2/ Image
It’s similar to last Spring when the hot-spot #Covid19 outbreaks were in yellow zone (Wuhan, New York, Seattle, cities in Iran, Italy, Spain, France, UK & Ireland) at 5-11°C, low absolute humidity 3/ jamanetwork.com/journals/jaman… Image

[Thread] Last night the Chief Medical Officer finally said #covid19 is spread “indoors in poor ventilation”

This is HUGELY SIGNIFICANT, & here’s why.. 1/ #Covid19
..Ireland’s public health message is not in step with international scientific community & has not kept pace with 9 months of research.. so no warnings have been given about ~airborne~ virus spread that happens ~beyond 2m~
2/
..it’s now known this respiratory virus is caught from inhaling when breathing; risks from surfaces were over-stared so perspex screens & deep cleaning have distracted people from the most important prevention- ‘clean air’ (take 5 mins this is worth it) 3/

#NursingHomes important to know #Covid19 builds up & spreads like cigarette smoke; so closed windows in cold weather is making conditions high-risk for super spread- it can be easily mitigated by airing rooms (ventilation), air purefier fans (filtration) & checks with CO2 monitor
Ventilation & air filtration usatoday.com/in-depth/graph…
#Nursinghomes -use air filtration fan units to ‘clean’ virus from a room for <€100 (& diy options also work)

#Nursinghomes -check poor ventilation with a CO2 (carbon dioxide) monitor for <€150 elemental.medium.com/air-purifiers-…
