FDA authorization was based on a study of 452 patients with mild to moderate #COVID19 that found that the mAb treatment decreased viral load, lowered the risk of hospitalization and eased some symptoms.

In this study of 452 patients with mild-moderate #COVID19, only 1.6% given the mAb treatment had symptoms progress such that they needed to be hospitalized or seek care in the emergency department. For patients who got the placebo, the rate of hospitalization was 6.3%.

The mAb treatment must be given EARLY after a positive #coronavirus test result—within 10 days of the onset of symptoms.
But it is NOT effective in patients who are hospitalized or require oxygen therapy.
No surprise, as mAb’s are not as effective as a direct antiviral drug.

Bottom line: this new mAb drug is another important weapon against the #coronavirus, but it’s not a magical silver bullet.
