In times of #ClimateEmergency we use the amount of energy of entire countries to power a digital currency with close to zero use value.
#Bitcoins carbon footprint is already comparable to that of New Zealand, its energy use to Chile. And it is growing. This needs to stop. /1
Since the value of #bitcoins - a blockchain currency largely used as speculative investment - is on the rise again and has almost reached 2017 peak levels, also the energy consumption and climate impact have reached enourmous proportions. 2/
Bitcoin’s trust-minimizing consensus has been enabled by its proof-of-work algorithm. The machines performing the “work” are consuming huge amounts of energy while doing so. Moreover, the energy used is primarily sourced from fossil fuels. All info here 3/ digiconomist.net/bitcoin-energy…
New study finds, the #bitcoin network “represents close to half of the current global data centre electricity use” 4/
The carbon footprint of bitcoins is particularly high, since mining largely happens in regions where energy is produced by non-renewable resources, in particular coal. 5/
Using renewables to mine #bitcoin is not a solution. Not only does this crowd out other renewable users, we also need renewable energy for other uses. 6/
If Bitcoin was a country, it would rank between Bangladesh and Chile in terms of energy consumption. 7/
#Bitcoins are utterly unsustainable – it cannot become the general payments system many hope it will.
Every single (!) transaction with #bitcoins has a carbon footprint equivalent to 59,025 hours of watching Youtube. It uses the energy of an avery US household of 25 days. 8/
Its not just current energy consumption of bitcoins - but the growth if it.
Yet its not too late. Here's a new global 1.5°C mitigation scenario that, without relying on growth and risky technologies models a social transformation ⬇️
The «Societal Transformation Scenario» shows the immense potential of reducing energy consumption in the global North, while at the same time increasing equality and well-being
The study produces concrete annual emission reductions for various sectors such as transport, food and housing and outline proposals for a socio-ecological transformation.
This way, global emissions can be reduced by 50 percent from 2020-30 and by a further 22 percent by 2050
Did you know that the @ClubOfRome, whose 1972 report Limits to Growth is still the most famous critique of economic growth, was "born in the corridors of the OECD", arguably the international organization most closely associated with the promotion of growth?
History thread 1/
The Club of Rome’s first report appeared in 1972, was published in 30 languages, sold over thirty million copies worldwide. Club of Rome boasts considerable authority as a private, non-state, global group of experts – a wise warden for the ecological survival of planet Earth. 2/
However, this extraordinary public and academic attention has overlooked the constitutive entanglements with the OECD that characterise the Club’s foundation and early history. This OECD–Club of Rome nexus needs explaining. 3/ cambridge.org/core/journals/…
Why are capitalist societies compelled to grow? What are the socio-ecological consequences of this relentless growth? Why should a #postcapitalist society be a #degrowth society?
Thread based on great chapter of Eric Pineault in our book 1/12
Everyone interested in these questions should read Erics chapter, entitled "The growth imperative in capitalist society." It lays the foundations for a theory of #accumulation that includes monetary flows, ideology, and ecology. 2/
Its core claims are:
If a capitalist economy can be defined by the drive towards accumulation, then growth is the materialization of this process & capitalism appears as growth. This appearance, capital’s materialization, is biophysical and ecological as much as it is social. 3/
