1/. NYE in Rio on the day Brazil’s #COVID19 death toll hit 195,000

Brazil has the world’s 3rd worst outbreak outside US & India

Is it a coincidence that these countries are run by populist nationalists?

Palantir are big in Brazil

Are they in India?👇
2/. In 2017, Steve Bannon asked @Nigel_Farage be part of a "convening authority" to "knit together a populist nationalist movement around the world".

He mentions Modi in India, but Bolsonaro in Brazil, Trump in US & Johnson in UK would also be part of it.
3/. Why were some of the most advanced economies in the world so woefully unprepared for #COVID?

The parallels btw UK & US flawed COVID strategies are uncannily similar:
- ignoring WHO warnings
- late lockdown
- lack of PPE
- introducing face masks on the same day, 4 months late
4/. The most disturbing parallel is the role of Palantir, the shadowy data company, founded by right-wing billionaire, Peter Thiel

#Palantir, who control data for the NHS (the UK's most trusted brand), taught #CambridgeAnalytica (UK's least trusted brand)
5/. The #PalantirPlan seems intimately connected with genomics. The UK, with it's cradle to grave NHS, is perhaps the ideal petri dish

In Sept @MattHancock launched a new 10 year strategy that will be at the heart of the programme for govt: #GenomeUK!
6/. If you'd missed this massive new policy announcement, its not your fault

#GenomeUK was launched on a Saturday(!) & was only covered by a few biomedical journals

A week later in his Conference speech, the PM did say he had a 10-year strategy to transform the UK

"Windmills!"
7/. Shockingly, at the same time as launching #GenomeUK, the Dept of Trade sent out this “invitation to invest”.

“The UK offers companies...active life sciences & increasingly expanding access to rich longitudinal data from the NHS’s 65 million patients."
directory-cms-public.s3.amazonaws.com/documents/Inve…
8/. “What!? The govt can’t share my private NHS health data for research purposes, can they?”

They can & they probably already have.

The deadline for you to opt out of the data sharing scheme was the 30 Sept.

You can still opt out👇, but it won’t help.
nhs.uk/your-nhs-data-…
9/. The govt website👆states that your “confidential patient information” may be shared with “pharmaceutical companies”

An ‘opt out’ only anonymises your data (ineffective) & can be overridden “in an emergency...For example, to help manage contagious diseases like #coronavirus”.
10/. The site says “NHS Digital will never sell your data”

But the invitation to invest by the Dept of Trade suggests otherwise

The UK has a single healthcare system making large-scale research easier & a “streamlined” regulatory system which can “maximise speed of approvals".
11/. “We have a duty to do more especially with data that the govt itself holds which can be used & shared for the benefit of society."

Govt's data strategy hints at the almost evangelical belief: removing barriers to the unfettered use of genomics.
gov.uk/government/pub…
12/. This evangelical zeal for the transformative power of genomics or ‘positive eugenics’, won’t come as a surprise to anyone who’s followed Peter Thiel or read Dominic Cummings.

Genomics are transformative.

In the right hands & properly regulated, they are a force for good.
13/. It also explains how - given the greatest gift any country could have wished for in the circumstances: a two-month head start - the UK & US both squandered it with failures to lockdown, to source PPE, to sort out test & trace, to protect care homes etc.

1/. COUNTDOWN TO JUSTICE/INJUSTICE - 10HRS

“The activities that #JulianAssange engaged in are activities that journalists engage in all the time. We wouldn’t have information without them”
@JuliaHall18 @amnesty

#Assange will hear the verdict on his extradition to the US today Image
2/. 9HRS - "#Assange, is at glaring risk that he would be put into a maximum-security prison & subjected to Special Administrative Measures"

"If the decision comes to extradite him, we'll come out very strongly against it" @JuliaHall18 @amnesty @AJEnglish
aljazeera.com/news/2021/1/3/…
3/. 8HRS - It's staggering little most people know about the #Assange case & it's importance for the protection of those who publish leaked/classified information that is in the public interest

But before people can care, they need to know what's at stake

1/. “The more you refuse to hear my voice
The louder I will sing
You hide behind walls of Jericho
Your lies will come tumbling”

Two things human rights abusers around the world should know:

1. We’re onto you

2. “That which has hardened will never win”.
2/. The thing is, as they sit in their mansions surrounded by fences & flunkies, they already know - deep in their souls - that they have already lost

The “that which has hardened will never win” line is from Andrei Tarkovsky👇& it is a good one to remember in darker times.
3/. “Because what has hardened will never win” is the last line.

Note, it is “will never win” not “can never win” or “may never win”

It is especially important if you are:

1. one of the good people filled with despair

2. one of the bad people filled with arrogance & fear.

1/. On New Year’s Eve last year, I sent a post-midnight cartoon to friends with a message saying hold on tight & enjoy the ride & a Rilke quote: “And now we welcome the new year. Full of things that have never been."

Nothing could have prepared us for what lay in store. #COVID19
2/. We’d hardly had a chance to recover from our hangovers before US assassinated General Soleimani, dramatically escalating tensions with #Iran

Until 20 January & Trump's departure, a danger of "Rapture-believing" hawks launching strikes on Iran remains.
3/. At the time of the Iran airstrike - while @BorisJohnson was holidaying on a private Caribbean island with his pregnant girlfriend - another crisis was brewing: #COVID19

@MattHancock says he knew about COVID at the v start of January & informed the PM.

1). THOSE WE'VE LOST IN 2020

Terry Jones, @montypython, not only filled the world with laughter, but also fought against injustice.

In 2003, ahead of the Iraq war his article exposed not only the illegality but the absurdity of an invasion & in 2005 he almost ran against Blair.
2). Andrew Mlangeni, who died aged 95, was the last surviving member of the Rivonia trial convicted & jailed for 26 years with Mandela

In 2018, aged 88, he came to @fisahara film festival

Six grueling days in a desert refugee camp

I only saw him smile!
3/. Another Rivonia defendant, Denis Goldberg who spent 22 years in prison after being sentenced with Mandela died, also died this year, aged 87

This clip shows him back in the courtroom where he & Rivonia defendants expected to be sentenced to death.

1/. A few weeks after the #Brexit referendum, I tweeted that it felt as if Britain had cut itself adrift & that we were floating, rudderless, on a raft with a donkey (our leaders), a monkey (our future leaders), a hyena (the scavengers) mayhem) & a vicious tiger (the far right).
2/. Brexit, if felt, had unleashed a dark genie from a bottle & would not go back in...and looking back, perhaps - like Trump in the US - that was the intention

Democracy, which depends on shared truths, was in retreat, & autocracy, which depends on shared lies, was on the march
3/. We’d had enough of experts

Facts were bundled aside by opinion & national pride was whipped into patriotic fervor with rampant slogans about sovereignty & taking back control

Reasoned argument & gentle humour could do nothing against this onslaught.
