Many analysts see #hazaragenocide & #Shiagenocide in #Balochistan as part of a local sectarianism problem inside #Pakistan or regionally linked to #Iran & #KSA tussle. But it could have more to do with #Afghanistan than Pakistan or the #Gulf. /2

To understand why #Balochistan incident (incl #Hazara/#Shia attacks) may not necessarily be sectarianism and more an offshoot of a bigger strategic problem, consider this #Ashura attack in #Karachi, which was not sectarian: /3

#Pakistani sectarian groups in #Punjab/#Sindh (like #LeJ, for example) are limited now to hate speech; mostly defanged by the state. But the ones in #Balochistan are lethal because of their links to #TTP+#BLA/#BLF+#Kulbushan network. /4

Inciting a conflict involving #Pakistani #Shia populations along the L-shaped region from #Karachi to #Gwadar/#Quetta to #GilgitBaltistan was an objective of the Kulbushan network, the #Indian terror network based in #Iran that utilized assets across #Afghanistan & #Pakistan. /5

From its base in #Chabahar, #India's #Kulbushan network (busted in 2016) attacked #Pakistani #Shia pilgrims to #Iran, and #Hazara of #Balochistan. It planned to extend the strife to #Karachi + #GilgitBaltistan. /6

To cut a long story short: #Pakistan can't control terrorism + sectarianism in #Balochistan without addressing:

1) #Iran's role, the same way it previously addressed Afghan havens.

And, 2) #India's role, by achieving some sort of detente.
