🛬 Travel

Mandatory quarantine for:

▶️ People arriving from Covid variant hotspots like Brazil or South Africa.

▶️ People arriving without Not Detected PCR test.

Arriving without Not Detected test could lead to €2,500 fine and/or 6 months in prison.
As reported earlier, increased Garda checkpoints near airports and ports.

If travel is deemed non-essential, people [ie returning holidaymakers] could be fined for breaching the 5km rule.
Full sign-off and approval on proposals at Cabinet tomorrow.

Move to full mandatory hotel quarantine for all arrivals not approved by Cabinet sub-committee - but it hasn't been ruled out for the future.

Reports the UK are moving to introduce such measures. theguardian.com/world/2021/jan…
Legislative underpinning for quarantines and fines will take time to put in place, I'm told. As is to be expected.

Cabinet Sub-Committee meets today.

🛬 Restrictions for international arrivals on the agenda (full-on mandatory quarantine for all is not expected at this point.)

🏫 Schools also likely to be discussed - after Taoiseach said full return to classrooms before March 17 unlikely.
As Minister Eamon Ryan is saying on the radio: immediate focus for mandatory quarantine here is...

(1) Quarantine for people without 'Not Detected' PCR test.

(2) Quarantine for people coming from Covid variant hotspots (eg South Africa and Brazil)
"Much stricter sanctions on 5km restriction" is on the agenda says Eamon Ryan.

"Increased surveillance" needed.

Antigen testing on the way for Irish hauliers heading for France too.
