At Leinster House today: Opposition politicians getting in early in response to government plans for quarantine.
“The Government’s ‘Living Alongside COVID’ plan has been a total failure.”
Richard Boyd Barrett says trying to live alongside COVID is like “playing footsie with a tiger.”
Quite a start.
.@bridsmithTD says she’s very concerned at workplace outbreaks and the return of outbreaks in meat plants.
She’s calling on all opposition parties to join their #ZeroCovid push.
.@paulmurphy_TD says plans leaked by Ministers are “a joke” in terms of quarantine.
He says it’s “like trying to spoon soup with a sieve.”
He says the Govt must resist lobbying in three weeks’ time “when lobbyists call for an early reopening at 200 cases per day.”
Labour next.
@DuncanSmithTD says “if we don’t commit” to mandatory hotel quarantine for all arrivals - lockdown and surge cycle will continue for the rest of the year.
And @geraldnash says tougher policing is needed around the border areas.
“It’s important that restrictions can be applied and enforced by Gardaí - the fact is... provisions restricting travel have not been enforceable for non-residents.”
And Sinn Féin’s @orourke_darren says the Government is trying to “give the impression they’re doing something without actually doing what’s needed” on quarantine and mandatory testing.
More on all of this and the day’s proceedings over on the Insta.
“While we are starting to make progress in reducing the level of the virus in the community, this is a critical time for all of us to hold firm to the public health advice."
