This amazing act of generosity is fake news, as @KathradaFound explains. South Africa had paid @AstraZeneca (twice the cost of the vaccine in Europe) & the latter got Serum Institute to ship it. The Indian govt had made no "sacrifice", in fact had no role to play at all...
To add outright embarrassment to discomfort, the South African govt has now asked Serum Institute to take back the vaccines, according to @NzingaQ, "because they were found to be ineffective."...

In a clarification, South Africa's Health Minister said that the AstraZeneca vaccine doses they purchased, & discovered to be ineffective against strains there, will be redistributed to other African Union members.
