"As you know, this was a landmark week for #COVAX, with the first vaccinations starting in Ghana ๐ฌ๐ญ and Cรดte dโIvoire ๐จ๐ฎ"-@DrTedros#COVID19#VaccinEquity
"In addition to those 2 countries, #COVAX has now delivered vaccines to ๐ฆ๐ด, ๐ฐ๐ญ, ๐จ๐ด, the ๐จ๐ฉ, the ๐ฌ๐ฒ, ๐ฎ๐ณ, ๐ฐ๐ช, ๐ฑ๐ธ, ๐ฒ๐ผ, ๐ฒ๐ฑ, ๐ฒ๐ฉ, ๐ณ๐ฌ, the ๐ต๐ญ, the ๐ฐ๐ท, ๐ท๐ผ, ๐ธ๐ณ, ๐ธ๐ฉ & ๐บ๐ฌ"-@DrTedros#COVID19#VaccinEquity
"In total, #COVAX has delivered more than 20 million doses of #COVID19 vaccine to 20 countries. In the next week, COVAX will deliver 14.4 million doses to a further 31 countries"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
"Earlier this week, #COVAX published the 1st round of allocations, covering the majority of economies participating in the Facility. This is encouraging progress, but the volume of doses being distributed through COVAX is still relatively small"-@DrTedros
"The first round of allocations covers between 2%-3% of the population of countries receiving #COVID19 vaccines through #COVAX, even as other countries make rapid progress towards vaccinating their entire population within the next few months"-@DrTedros
"We currently face several barriers to increasing the speed and volume of production, from export bans to shortages of raw materials including glass, plastic and stoppers"-@DrTedros#COVID19#VaccinEquity
"WHO is working on4โฃapproaches:
1โฃ & most short-term approach is to connect companies who are producing #COVID19 vaccines with other companies who have excess capacity to fill & finish.
"For example, part of the deal between Johnson & Johnson and Merck announced this week is for Merck to provide fill and finish for the J&J #COVID19 vaccine"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
"We need more partnerships like this, and we need them in all regions. WHO can support this process by identifying gaps and providing a โmatchmakingโ service between #COVID19 vaccine producers and companies with capacity"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
"2โฃ approach is bilateral technology transfer, through voluntary licensing from a company that owns the patents on a #COVID19 vaccine to another company who can produce them"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
"A good example of this approach is AstraZeneca, which has transferred the technology for its #COVID19 vaccine to SKBio ๐ฐ๐ท & the Serum Institute ๐ฎ๐ณ, which is producing AstraZeneca vaccines for #COVAX. The main disadvantage of this approach is the lack of transparency"-@DrTedros
"3โฃapproach is coordinated technology transfer. This would involve universities & manufacturers licensing their #COVID19 vaccines to other companies through a ๐mechanism coordinated by WHO, which would facilitate the training of staff & coordinate ๐ฐ in infrastructure"-@DrTedros
"This provides more transparency, and a more coherent global approach that contributes to regional health security"-@DrTedros#COVID19#VaccinEquity
"And itโs a mechanism that would increase production capacity not only for the #COVID19 pandemic, but for future pandemics and potentially for the production of vaccines for routine immunization programmes"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
After the spread of H5N1 influenza in the mid-2000s, WHO supported technology transfer for the production of pandemic flu vaccines to 14 countries, increasing global capacity by more than 700 million doses"-@DrTedros#VaccinEquity
"4โฃ many countries with vaccine manufacturing capacity can start producing their own vaccines by waiving intellectual property rights, as provided for in the TRIPS agreement. Those provisions are there for use in emergencies. If now is not a time to use them, when is?"-@DrTedros
"We thank ๐ฟ๐ฆ & ๐ฎ๐ณ for the proposal to @wto to waive patents on medical products for #COVID19 until the end of the pandemic. Next week, WHO & #COVAX partners will meet with partners from govts & industry to identify bottlenecks in production & discuss how to solve them"-@DrTedros
"To speak more about the potential for technology transfer, today Iโm delighted to be joined by Dr Marie-Paule Kieny, the Chair of the Medicines Patent Pool Foundation"-@DrTedros
"Dr Kieny is no stranger to WHO. Until 2017, she served as WHOโs Assistant Director-General for Health Systems and Innovation. She is now the Director of Research at Inserm, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research in Paris"-@DrTedros
We call for a world where every woman and girl has access to affordable quality health services, and all women and girls are treated and respected as equals.
On #InternationalWomensDay, letโs speak-up for gender equality & womenโs rights!

#CervicalCancerย could be the first cancer EVER to be eliminated, if by 2030:
90% of girls are vaccinated
70% of women are screened
90% of women with cervical disease receive treatment
Let's commit to stop cervical cancer everywhere! #InternationalWomensDay
How are countries preparing for #COVID19 vaccinesโ
With careful planning & support from WHO, @UNICEF, @gavi & partners, countries ๐๐๐ can ensure that they have all the resources they need to safely deliver COVID-19 vaccines. More in detail ๐bit.ly/3b9nZZj
How can countries get #COVID19 vaccines from the COVAX Facilityโ
9โฃ2โฃ low- & middle-income economies are able to access COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility Advance Market Commitment (AMC). Read more ๐bit.ly/3b9nZZj
Countries have developed National Deployment & Vaccination Plans (NDVP) to prepare for #COVID19 vaccines introduction.
Once an NDVP is reviewed & approved, and other requirements met - that country can be allocated vaccines from the #COVAX Facility.๐bit.ly/3b9nZZj
๐ guidance on the procurement of radiotherapy equipment released today in collaboration with @iaeaorg, aims to improve access to this life-saving #cancer treatment option that is still lacking in many parts of the world ๐๐๐
Over 50% of #cancer patients require radiotherapy as part of cancer care. It is frequently used to treat the most common types like cervical, lung & #BreastCancer. Access to radiotherapy is inadequate, particularly in low-& middle-income countries.
The ๐ technical guidance on radiotherapy equipment aims to ensure that:
โ the selection of equipment is appropriate to country & health facility contexts
โ treatment is delivered safely
โ quality is maintained
โ services are sustainable
๐๐ผ๐๐ผ for a landmark pricing agreement which provides opportunity to make rotavirus vaccine available to more children living in humanitarian crises.
The agreement makes use of the multi-partner Humanitarian Mechanism, launched in 2017.
Rotavirus vaccine is the second vaccine to be accessed through the scheme. The first to be made available was the pneumococcal vaccine.
Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoeal disease in children under 5 years globally, responsible for up to 200,000 child deaths each year.
Eating a healthy diet ๐๐๐๐ฅ๐ฅฆ๐ can help prevent #obesity. People can:

Today the first ever global specifications for assistive technology designed for low-resource settings is launched. This joint WHO & @UNICEF initiative helps ensure quality hearing, mobility & cognitive aids reach those who need them most.
1 billion people need assistive technology yet only 1 in 10 has access to the product they need. WHO and @UNICEF are working to change this, launching the first global ๐๐๐ specifications for 26 products including wheelchairs ๐ฆฝ and hearing aids ๐ฆป:
