Thread: We need to address the myths surrounding women in the family law court. The myth that women Make Up abuse to obtain “strategic advantage” in court & that kids tell health care workers they were abused bc their mother is “coaching them” firstly- @MattsJane @AbigailBoydMLC
2/ We cannot tell women they need to leave their violent homes but then accuse them of lying the moment they try. We understand women cannot leave without the family law court. You cannot simply pick up & leave without court orders @Drhutch2011 @BethanyinCBR @kjoh7876
3/ So when we have rates of child abuse & family violence as high as we do- we have to EXPECT that the court is full of family violence...which it is.
@NTVorg @melwojtas @angelo_virgona @ANROWSCEO @MSMWatchdog2013 @RonniSalt @LouiseKNewman @ManjulaOConnor @AustralianLobby @dvnsw
4/ So once again #BelieveWomen - the research demonstrates that there’s less than 2% of women who lie in court- and 16% of men. Making assumptions about lying needs to stop with everyone involved in this process. @petaswarbrick @deniseshrivell @ABC @AlboMP @moonscapecat
5/Children, more than anything need to be #believed the consequences of children being disbelieved is not a small thing- teaching kids we don’t trust them when they report abuse has consequences that last a lifetime- they learn not to disclose @BraveheartsInc @BlueKnotOrg
6/They learn not to trust anyone, they stop disclosing. They start to wonder if they are telling the truth too. Kids stop believing anyone can help them, incl the ones that love them. To create this sense of mistrust is one of the biggest cruelties we inflict on kids as a system
7/To teach kids we think they are liars, that we don’t trust them or their mothers is our countries biggest shame & scandal. There are millions of survivors of abuse in Australia. Why do we assume they are lying? What is the advantage of lying? @marquelawyers @CCCBuryStEd
8/Family court costs families hundreds of thousands of dollars. Ppl treated as criminals for wanting safe homes. Being yelled at, threatened, mocked &demeaned by perpetrators, judges & lawyers reflects the abuse already experienced at home. It needs to stop now. @custodypeace

1/ The idea of some men in this thread that they could “tell” if a mate was an abuser is not just false but also dangerous. These are the same kind of men who provide ‘character references’ in court for abusers,saying what a ‘good guy’ he is. Most abusers are very charming,...
2/ ..& frequently successful & funny. They will often tell you how ‘she’ is bit ‘crazy’ & ‘jealous’
Men need to remember part of the abuse is to convince everyone around her that he’s the prize, the patient one ..& he generously ‘tolerates’ her. If his friends love him.. @davtw2
...& if he isolates her friends & family..he can then completely jail her from the community...without any physical jail cell .
No one should believe they are above being manipulated by an abuser- they can convince lawyers, magistrates & health professionals with ease @yabbtopia

10 OTHER ways to address low conviction rates of sexual assault

TRIGGER WARNING
1. avoid taking statements immediately after assault-she may have been given drugs by the perp
2. learn to recognise a traumatised woman may not be a “good” witness @Drhutch2011 @dhanyajmani
3. recognise that vaginal swabs and anal swabs are not a fun sport, a doctor’s done them for a reason
4. if women has injuries/lacerations consider that she may not be into 50 shades of gray but rather be telling the truth
5. involve experts in sexual trauma, family violence
And PTSD in your decision making tree
6. Always make sure a female support worker is available to survivors
7. consider the relationship of the victim & perp in it’s entirety -most young girls don’t want to be strangled on the first date or much ever really

Remember that time in 2014, when two men were killed by coward-punches ?
And how they changed the laws, shut down Sydney & lost $16 billion in revenue?
Remember a similar response to the 120 women & children killed in family violence that year?
Yeah neither do I @RonniSalt
I wrote this a year ago... still relevant

My heart is heavy this morning.
A long thread..TRIGGER
I became a dr, a brown one at that!Doesn’t that mean we have equality? Despite the fact at least a 1/5 of the work of GPs is fam violence related - there’s no fam violence Medicare rebate. GP’s are financially #MedTwitter
Penalised if they spend too long with a patient.
Medicare cards are linked with abusive hsbs so some women cannot access medical help.
GPs know that women need more than what can be offered in a consult- but the psychologist or psychiatrist books are full- & they charge gaps...
But these women, even the rich ones are under financial control & cannot pay!
So we sometimes try not to charge but then we have our own families to consider & once again female drs will wear the costs because the govt won’t.@RonniSalt @Lisa_Wilkinson @Drhutch2011

1/ Actually @vanOnselenP DISHONESTY & Lying is seen much more commonly in those with Psychopathic personalities.

We know that there are very high rates of psychopathy in those with leadership positions such CEOs & executives.
@Lisa_Wilkinson @RonniSalt @drlouisehansen #auspol
2/ Psychopaths display a lack of empathy and compassion. They can be grandiose & even charming.
When psychopaths are in leadership we see more bullying, & increased staff turnover.
@Barristerious @sally_stevensxn @shaunwarnock_sw @yabbtopia
3/ organisations with leaders that have psychopathic traits tend to display more unethical and destructive behaviours & have poorer outcomes also. Rates of psychopathy in corporate/executive roles are up to 20%.
Compared to say 1% in the general population. @Drhutch2011 #auspol
