(2) Others were politicizing this tragedy. I tend to discuss politics when it's a politically motivated shooting. But the fact that others try to politicize them, means I want to counter that.
The main reason 2A supporters fight for their rights is to enable self defense.
(3) In addition to firearms being one of the most effective ways to save your life and that of others, they also act as a deterrent to would-be tyrants. Like nuclear weapons, their presence has an effect, without ever needing to use them.
Let's talk about self defense.
(4) Even without a firearm, you can dramatically increase your odds of survival with #SituationalAwareness & common sense prepping, eg building security.
After every mass shooting I hear "I never thought it could happen here."
This statement is dumb. It can happen ANYWHERE.
(5) It is especially likely to happen in a so-called "gun free zone."
Because, obviously, would-be killers know that they are soft targets.
Any time you enter one of these killing zones, you are taking a risk. Consider your options wisely.
(6) You don't HAVE TO use a building or other space that stops you from carrying vital self defense equipment.
In places like courthouses, you're hopefully protected by armed LEOs. But you still need to use situational awareness. Murderers can take out those people first.
(7) Needless to say, every time folk are murdered in their workplace, it is because sufficient security measures were not in place, or failed to be effective.
You can hire professionals to advise on security options, and to train you and your staff in situational awareness.
(8) Obviously, since I have a working moral compass, I feel compassion for anyone who is victimized by violent crime. That does not mean I must be silent about what others can do to prevent the same fate. It is NOT "blaming the victim." We do it in other areas eg aviation.
(9) One of the simplest things you can do is to lock your office doors, & only open them when you have verified the person isn't a threat. You can have bullet resistant screens like a bank does. These things increase your survival odds, even if the assailant gets through them.
(10) Houses of worship must have lockable and locked doors during services. Many buildings (of any faith) now have a good security plan.
Where it is legal to carry, it should be encouraged among those who are "fit." Lives are saved every day across America because of this.
(11) IMO it is necessary to have laws aimed at stopping the unfit from possessing firearms. The debate is over the details of how you identify the right people and not the wrong people. The fields of psychiatry and psychology have their bad apples, like every field does.
(12) Instead of pointlessly complaining about how tragic it is that people can kill others with firearms, I suggest taking action. And I don't mean walking in a protest march or boycotting a company.
Act today to prepare your environments & your own behavior as best you can.
(13) Also, consider becoming a regular blood donor if medically appropriate for you. And share this advice with others.
Blood banks are always short of donors, but esp. during the pandemic. Go online and find out how your local providers are reducing Covid transmission risk.
(14) Lastly, ask yourself if the political and community leaders telling you to support reducing lawful access to firearms are protected in this way themselves. Usually, they are. Which is why they don't understand the justified fear that we the peasants live with day to day.
(15) You can find more tips about preparing for incidents at the links below.
(1) Well, news of an attack near the US Capitol with one LEO killed and another injured is NOT how I like to wake up in the morning.
Especially when it's met with far right denialism of what was done to our brave USCP earlier this year.
And no I will NOT move on from 1/6.
(2) MAGA folk are denying some of the relevant facts. IDC who rammed a vehicle into a barrier or why. It doesn't matter.
What matters to me is that the very people who educated me about backing the blue and, separately, having a no excuses attitude to life, are full of excuses.
(3) Prior to 1/6 I had every expectation that whenever a criminal injures or kills an LEO, MAGA folk could be relied upon to show empathy for the LEO & his or her family.
Of all that I saw that day, it was the conditional support for LEOs that gave me the biggest push, out.
(1) Sorry @benshapiro but if you're correctly reported here, you're wrong & you're not helping the GOP cause.
There are measurable differences btwn the number of polling stations in majority black areas vs majority white areas in certain states eg GA.
We should change that.
(2) If the Georgia GOP wants to show it believes in equality of access to polling stations then it should work on making sure they are more fairly distributed throughout the state.
You and I would drive for miles to be able to vote but not everyone has a car or much gas money.
(3) For years, I've seen instances of drastically reducing the number of polling stations in certain areas right before election day, across the US.
Here's one example, but it wasn't the GOP that time.
(1) Football (soccer) is huge in the UK, esp. in England. All the major clubs have ardent fans around the world, including @Arsenal, with a fans' YouTube channel @AFTVmedia.
Former AFTV personality Claude Callegari died two days ago aged 58.
AFTV had dropped him in 2020.
(2) Fans of #RIPClaude have said he was open a few years ago about having mental health struggles. Later, he he was fired after making a racist comment on a livestream in July 2020. More recently, he fended off hateful tweets & alluded to thoughts of suicide.
(3) It appears he died by suicide.
Kudos to @max69752565 for tweeting these suicide hotline numbers for various countries.
It's good practice to provide these whenever you write about the issue. I support talking about it; others claim it's better not to. IMO they are wrong.
(2) Gotta say I am rather unimpressed by Mary Norwood. Either say you're a Trump supporter or not. It's pretty simple.
How in the world you expect to get elected to anything in ATL in future is beyond me.
So many people have aligned themselves with Sidney Powell. Not smart.
(3) Regarding the GA state speaker's letter to the ATL Mayor about street crime there... yikes. Both politicians are missing the point but at least the Mayor doesn't align herself with those who condone domestic terrorism, AFAIK.
(1) The latest example of stupidity by activists trying to politicize everything, often by referring to race.
Both sides do it! This time it's the MAGA crowd. I don't call them conservatives, bc I'm part of the #PostTrumpGOP trying to save the party from the toxic Trump brand.
(2) The alleged murder happened 4 days ago. MAGA activists have jumped to conclusions iso taking just 10 minutes to find the facts.
It was the DC Met Police who used the term "accident," not particularly CNN.
It was clumsy but it's not unusual for LEOs to use the term.
(3) Read the PD statement below. As usual, the first they heard of the incident was when a bystander reported what he or she thought was a car accident. Only later did the PD find it was an alleged murder and car crash/wreck.
