Gosh—Over 122,000 🇬🇧 NHS personnel have #LongCovid, out of 1.1 million people in the UK were affected by the condition. What’s the #2 occupational group? 114,000 teachers. Many are unable to work full time because of Long #COVID19 illness & brain fog. 🧵
theguardian.com/society/2021/a…
2) “Patient care is being hit because many of those struggling with long Covid are only able to work part-time, are too unwell to perform their usual duties, or often need time off because they are in pain, exhausted or have “brain fog”.
3) “Ongoing illness can have a devastating impact on individual doctors, both physically and by leaving them unable to work—it puts a huge strain on the health service, which was already vastly understaffed before the pandemic,” said Dr Helena McKeown of British Med Assoc
4) “With around 30,000 sickness absences currently linked to Covid in the NHS in England, we cannot afford to let any more staff become ill. Simply put, if they are off sick, they’re unable to provide care and patients will not get the care and treatment they need.
5) “In the longer term, if more staff face ongoing illness from past Covid-19 infection, the implications for overall workforce numbers will be disastrous.”
6) And how common is #LongCovid? Very. See video and thread 🧵 below.
7) 20% at 5 weeks and 10% at 12 weeks have #LongCovid symptoms.
8) the crazy thing is that 30% of hospital recovered #COVID19 patients end up back in hospital within 5 months. That’s an insanely high %. And 12% (1 in 8) die of complications after discharge.

It’s a “mammoth” task to tackle #LongCovid.
9) “They added that “many felt angry that they had, almost certainly, contracted Covid-19 in their workplaces but now felt abandoned or even penalised. A small but not insignificant number have been asked to leave roles due to prolonged sick leave.”

We must recognize #LongCovid

📍NEW—We now know why US cannot share its #COVID19 vaccines with the world—Trump WH had forced legal contracts that blocks US doses by Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, J&J from being donated. Hence 🇨🇦&🇲🇽 only got “loans”, despite >45 mil dose US surplus. 🧵

2) “The contracts the Trump administration signed with the vaccine manufacturers prohibit the U.S. from sharing its surplus doses with the rest of the world. According to contract language VF has obtained, the agreements with Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, & Janssen state:
3) ““The Government may not use, or authorize the use of, any products or materials provided under this Project Agreement, unless such use occurs in the United States” or U.S. territories.

Whoa—New study found active #SARSCoV2 in the intestines of children for up to 36 days—70% of infected children carried the active virus without showing any symptoms, giving worry to “invisible transmitters”. Of 22 cases, 20 were children under age of 6. 🧵

2) Stool samples from a two-year-old who returned from overseas still tested positive after 36 days.

CUHK collected 17.5k stool samples and successfully detected 22 confirmed cases, of which 20 were children under the age of 6.
3) “After the child recovers, even if he has antibodies & the respiratory tract samples are negative, the intestinal tract can continue to carry the active virus for a long time, and the stool is positive for the virus, which may pose a risk of transmission.”

WOW—first bilateral pandemic BUBBLE between 2 countries!

New Zealand 🇳🇿 & Australia 🇦🇺 can form a quarantine-free bubble because they both adopted a #ZeroCovid strategy.

Don’t say “but but—islands”. Vietnam 🇻🇳 is not an island, yet has zero #COVID19 too. Leadership matters! 🧵
3) If you elect competent leaders who doesn’t try to rip a country apart (cough, Brexit, cough), but instead led with compassion... you can rock zero Covid too.

3) Keep in mind that an NHL team like the @Canucks have strict safety protocols and almost unlimited PPE and testing budget. And yet a major outbreak still occurred.

📍AIRBORNE RESTAURANT TRANSMISSION—3 families—“No close contact or fomite contact identified, aside from back-to-back sitting—Airflow dynamics indicates the infection distribution is consistent with a spread of **long-range transmission of exhaled virus-laden aerosols**”. 🧵
2) It was clearly aerosol airborne transmission— “No sharing of items (e.g., a kettle) was observed between the three tables and no conversations occurred between the three families.”

sciencedirect.com/science/articl… Image
3) here was the air pattern—“The infection risk was also higher for patrons at zone-ABC tables (red) than those at non-ABC zone tables (χ2 = 25.78, P < 0.001). None of the patrons seated in the non-ABC zone were infected.” Image
