This chat with wife of one of my #Diabetes patients adm with #Covid19
1. Please trust the Doctors taking care of you. They know best at that point of time.
2. Steroids may be one of the drugs used for treatment especially when oxygen saturation low (1/n)
3.Steroids can significantly affect glucose levels. They can typically cause rise in after meal glucose levels during the day & morning fasting glucose levels are better
4.Some oral agents (tablets) for Diabetes may need to be stopped on admission(2/n)
7. Even some patients who did not have diabetes in past may find that have been detected newly diagnosed DM or may have high glucose levels due to steroids and other reasons. Insulin may be required in such cases also (4/n)
8. In many diabetes patients, when the glucose control prior to admission was good, gradually when steroids are tapered and stopped, there is a good chance Insulin also can be reduced/ stopped depending on glucose levels and HbA1C. Diet and exercise will be important (5/n)
So, always inform ur regular Doctor and always trust the Doctor who is treating at present in hospital. Remember Doctors, Nurses & all healthcare staff are going thru a lot of stress & many are working overtime. Do trust them & help them treat u better (6/6) #COVID19#Medtwitter
