DISCLAIMER: Names and Locations purely coincidental. Haitaki hasira.
.
They all have an athlete’s, or soldier physique. They smell great as well. They are carrying some papers in a folder.

They look around, before noticing, Thomas, the person they are here to meet.
They see him as he lightly waves his hand, almost standing. Thomas 35, is seated with another guy, Mustafa, 27. Somali as well.
.
Later, according to Thomas, all these guys looked the same, in every way, like… as if they were brothers.

Lakini si watu ukweli hufanana?

Enewei!
So now there are 5 boys at this table. The five boys gotea each other.

Alafu Ahmad, Aden, and Yassir take an overly keen interest in Mustafa, or Musti, as he shall be know from now. They speak to him lengthily in a bit of Somali and Swahili, and occasionally burst out laughing.
Musti tells Thomas, that he now remembers Aden. They went to Ainsworth Primary School a long time ago. And then they poteleanad. And they all grew up on 7th Street, Eastleigh.

Musti asks about Aden’s family and he tells them about his. Awww.

A few funny and nostalgic moments.
A waiter comes and asks the guys what they will have. Everyone is going to have coffee. Black house coffee. And some pastries, and some water. Except Thomas. Him, he wants tea.

They continue to speak to each other in Somali, before they switch to easy English and Swahili.
Outside their kiSomali and the really good Swahili, Thomas will write in police statement, that these three boys, all of them, have a very deep American accent.

When the waiter finishes setting the supplies on the table, and moves away, they get into serious business.

Game on.
Aden tells Thomas that this conversation is very confidential and asks hims if he is sure he wants Musti in the meeting.

Ahmad and Yasiir, further clarify that their business is very ‘high level.' Their concern really is about Musti's.

Thomas says Musti is like his brother.
Musti is not even offended.

Thomas says that he really doesn’t mind Musti sitting in the meeting.

Ahmad asks Thomas, ‘Is Musti here because we are Somalis or is he really a friend?’

Musti responds to Ahmad in a bit of Somali, before Aden interjects and says, ‘Let’s continue.’
Aden addresses Thomas, 'These are the guys I was telling you about. We have a joint UN & GOK humanitarian job we want to pilot in three counties up North before going nationwide. The project is urgent and requires 30-50 Four Wheel Drive vehicles. But they want to start with 10.
‘We are hoping we can work together with you. We’d like to help us lease the cars from you. But we are looking at getting the cheapest possible costs.’

Thomas says he doesn’t do the lease business, and he doesn’t even understand it.

Ahmad says ‘Neither do we. But tuko na plan?'
'What we really want, is for you to sell us the 10 cars. ANd then you say we have leased from you. Just that.’

They talk and talk. They explain to him how they see it working, plus the math, alafu after project is over, they bring the cars back so that he resells for them.
Thomas akasema, he doesn’t have all the cars they want. In fact, his yard only has 2. But, he can talk to a few guys in the business and see how many cars they can get for them at a good rate.

Hapo kwa reselling yeye haoni shida.

Haya.

Ahmed reminds him it's a pitch really.
And that the job will go to the lowest bidder. So afikirie vile kutaenda.

They tell him, ‘This procurement process is designed in every way, so that everyone can eat. We are hoping we can eat with you.'

Ahmad ends the meeting by saying, they are meeting some four more guys.
Alafu akamwambia, they’d really love to work together.

They give him a sample quotation and what to do, and that he should make sure his details are in order, na ata huko ushuru asikuwe na noma yoyote, and that, he, as the business lead must have a certificate of good conduct.
Yasiir barely speaks.

They chat a bit more over nothing and then, Aden’s phone rings. He turns and waves at another gentleman on a different table.

He takes the bill & tells waiter atalipa.

And then go through what Thomas believed was the same conversation they had just had.
4 MONTHS EARLIER.
Aden drives his red plate Land Cruiser into Thomas’ car yard, looking for a car for his wife. They meet for the first time ever.

He tells Thomas his wife has just given birth and he wants something clean and good, but one that works for both mother and child.
They speak at length before they settle for a Mark X.

In fact, Thomas even helps with registration and insurance details, change of colours and everything Aden needed.

Alafu Aden tells him, he has that ex-humanitarian car that he’d like registered kama gari za kawaida.
Thomas says he’ll help. He knows a guy, who helps will come but at a fee.

A car is sold.
A car is registered.
A friendship is fostered.

Aden tell him, he has an upcoming project that is really big and that will need many cars, and when the time comes, he will call on Thomas.
Thomas assumes it the usual Nairobi promises of I will bring you so much business you will faint because you won’t jeep up.
.
Thomas na Musti leave and go away into another coffee shop still within the complex. They sit down and order more coffee and tea, as they chat away.
He asks Musti what he thinks.

Musti tells him, from his judgement, those guys are roho safi. Besides, they even showed paper work for that job they are saying. Plus they said, they are honestly trying to con the system, and that they will actually buy all the cars in hard cash.
Musti says, ‘Wewe uza gari. What they do with those cars, don’t involve yourself. Hilo sio shughuli yako.’

He give Musti 5K for coming through.

Thomas akajiita mkutano. He convinces himself that this deal will work in his favor. Kuomoka anataka kuomoka.

Hashtag Yang Milioneya.
Akicheza kiyeye auze gari ata 4.5-5M hivi, na ni kumi, ile hao ocha itiasha, anunulie Mamaa ka Demio, na afanye shughuli mbili tatu.

He goes and quickly gets a certificate of good conduct, makes sure his accounts and business are up to date with the authorities. Juu atakafunga.
He keeps contact with Aden as he helps him to upload the paper work and bid.

And then he waits.

A week later he gets a call. He has to come to do a physical interview and presentation in Gigiri.
.
He decides to go alone, at the advice of Aden, juu Musti can’t speak for the biz.
Also Aden tells him, to say that he is the front man for the business, and he just came to show capacity. Also, asisema anajua mtu yeyote wakionana.

Akapiga luku sio luku.

Best suit nini nini, says his deepest prayers. His wife and friends do a prayer chain during the meeting.
Akifika huko, Yasiir gives him bound copies of his company profile. They went ahead and created it for him. He pitias it, just to be sure what company he runs.

At the meeting, there’s like 8 guys. They go through the presentation and keeps explains his business and what he does.
The only person he knows from this meeting, is Yasiir.

No Ahmed and no Aden.

The meeting is tough but he ends up saying, if he is given an opportunity, he can supply the cars. He has the ability, networks and financial backing.

Meeting is simple, but not how he expected.
Already anashuku.

These guys downloaded his logo and then went ahead to put together a killer presentation.

When he asks, they tell him this is what they do for a living, and they know exactly what to do, and what buttons to push.
.

The next week he is called back to Gigiri.
But now they meet at the coffee shop that has terrible coffee. But who cares?

Aden & Ahmad are there. Yasiir explains that him and Aden are working hard to convince the other guys to give him the job. What they want to know is if he can deliver all the cars after the pilot?
And what he would require. And if he is serious about the gig, they push it kabisa.

He says, the cost of these cars at the basic second hand is 5-6 million each, and he would need KE 60M at least. And he doesn’t have that cash.

Alafu juu ya uwoga, he says can't get all cars.
So if they really want, they can buy the two from him, and he will help them get the others from his networks.

They see through him and tell him to relax.

Aden says, it is ok. And that he has a solution.

He will buy the two cars from Thomas, cash. But he wants bei ya jioni.
Alafu he says, Thomas can marshal the other 8 cars, so that they all look like they came directly from him.

Aden will negotiate with the owners, but Thomas must bring the cars. But it must not be seen like Aden is the owner of the cars, because internal politics.

Easy.

Right?
Two days later, Aden comes and says, because they are now ‘Business Partners’ Thomas should go to his bank and get an account, under his name and Aden’s name, specifically for this cars deal. Alafu achukue cheque, post dated them to Aden’s company, over the cut Aden is to get.
Thomas thinks about it, and then he agrees.

They get an account up and running, and Aden’s company gets 7.5M spread over 10 cheque leaves of 750K each.
.

The next day, Thomas gets an email that he has the gig from the NGO, and that he should expect payments in milestones.
He goes with his contract and details to a friend, who looks and says this is a good deal.

He accepts the terms. Signs and sends the paperwork.

As soon as he send, he gets another document. This one is from Aden. It’s an extension for the 47 counties.
Saying because he was successful with the bid, he is being single sourced.

KAMAAAAAN!!!

Sawa?

My G akaenda ngithe akaweka mikakati. He provides an invoice & introduction letter from the Bank. He also shows the bank the letters so that he can get financing in case it is needed.
One week later, Aden Ahmed and Yasiir come back to him. They tell him they want to pay for one car first, but they want to pay cash.

He’s like, ‘Sawa.’

They meet at his bank give him KE4.5M, cash. He deposits and signs a source of funds declaration. He releases one car.
But Aden tells him, to talk to the guy huko revenue, abadilishe majina faster faster. The car now is registered to Aden.

Two days later they pay for the other car, in cash. He releases it. And decided to play like himself. He has deposited all the cash in the new account.
The next Monday morning, they call him and tell him, the Country Director has a problem with a missing document. His Bank Statements. If he can hustle and get one with at least 25M as guarantee by COB.

He only has 9M. Na haiko kwa his business account.

Crap. Another roadblock.
They tell him, he they can help him with the cash, and bank guaranteed financing documents, but payments now have to go through Aden’s company.

Alafu, he has to get the other 8 cars to kick off the campaign in a hurry ndio waitishe pesa walipwe.

He want's to call it quits here.
But these guys have been honest with him from Day 1.

They have proved they are true and honest businessmen.

He goes all in.
.
Now, the project launches in 1 week, and they need 10 cars have to be flagged off by officials wa gava, na NGO.

Kanataka kunuka.

Yaani the lawsuit against Esto has taken a whole turn.

But first, how we got here.
.
Our Esto has 3 full time employment departments.
1, Security & Safety. 2, Engineering & Technical. 3, Grounds and Works. For real, these are actual jobs.

Security and safety is more obvious.
Engineering and technical hao ndio wanakuwanga na kazi mingi na ngumu.

Mara stima.

Mara pipe ime-burst, mara mtu anataka kuoshewa gari. Sijui Kenya Power ama Nairobi Water, sijui Safaricom wanataka kuweka net... All major issues that affect the whole esto, hiyo ni yao.
Grounds do the detail work. And detail mostly ni udaku na umbea with the housies and security peeps.

But for real, their work is to also to make sure the esto is clean always, the garbage guys don’t steal the cats and the playground, live fences don't look bad when guests come.
