(2/9) Our 40-page review summarises over 100 academic studies, empirical reports and journalistic investigations. It finds that Facebook has been failing on all fronts when it comes to preventing #climatemisinformation
(3/9) Total disclosure - this was initially an internal document that we were never planning on publishing. But once we put all the evidence together, it felt overwhelming, and that we had a duty to release it to the public.
So what are Facebook doing? Or not doing?
(4/9) Firstly, #Facebook does not have any public policy on #climate#misinformation specifically. We were particularly surprised to find no mention in their Community Standards or Advertising Standards.
(5/9) Adding policies would be a simple change to make. But the problem runs deeper. We reviewed multiple studies that found Facebook is not implementing the #misinformation policies that it does already have on e.g. elections, #Covid / vaccinations, or #hatespeech
(6/9) Meanwhile on the #advertising platform, Facebook is not detecting clear and obvious #climatedenial in at least the UK and the US. This means Facebook is directly accepting money to spread climate lies.
(7/9) We also found that Facebook's latest solution to climate misinformation - the Climate Science Information Center - is fundamentally ineffective, not following the climate communication science. Even if it was effective, it is not operating at the appropriate scale
