In November, the Premier called the Governor of Michigan “brain dead” and then complained in a radio interview that he could not even get a meeting with her during a trip to the state in 2019.
Now I don’t defend Governor Whitmer or her position, but the Premier of Alberta should be able to get a meeting with her - as a matter of respect if nothing else.
This Premier promised Albertans a so-called “fight-back strategy” in the lead up to the 2019 election campaign.
So far, that approach has only brought us the Steve Allan inquiry, the energy war room, and the hunt for Bigfoot.
Two years into the Premier’s mandate, that strategy has left us with fewer jobs and an economy that will be among the slowest to come out of the pandemic.
When the Premier of Alberta is not at the table, working Albertans pay the price.
The potential shutdown of Enbridge’s Line 5 will have a major impact on the Canadian economy and the reverberations of such a move will be felt back here in Alberta.
We need a comprehensive and strategic diplomatic approach to relations with State Governments and the White House south of the border.

Albertans need leadership that is focused on the challenges they face .. with their needs front and centre.
I don’t have any insight into the motives of Todd Loewen or others in the UCP Caucus who may support him. 1/7 #ableg
But I do know that the emergency department in the Fairview hospital — in his riding, and that’s also my hometown — was closed due to a shortage of doctors and MLA Loewen brought up Jason Kenney’s war on doctors in his letter. 2/7 #ableg
Fairview is one of three rural hospitals in that situation right now.
We have serious problems in our rural hospitals … and an overwhelmed contact tracing system in the midst of a massive third wave.
According to numbers released by Statistics Canada today, 13,000 jobs were lost in April as Alberta became the COVID-19 hotspot in Canada and the United States. #ableg
The survey was conducted from April 11-17, which means the data does not reflect any of the recent public health restrictions that were introduced to address the soaring number of COVID cases in AB that led to the highest infection rate among all provinces and US states. #ableg
This shows that Jason Kenney and his UCP government's failure to act has hurt our economy and left thousands of Albertans unemployed. And their failure to act means the economic impact will be deeper and further delay the recovery. #ableg
First and foremost, do the measures that apply today, apply across the province or are they are still on a regional basis as was put forward last week?
If it’s the latter, it’s a profound failure.
The Premier is continuing to make false promises and create false hope, setting up for further challenges and disappointment in the weeks to come.
The vast majority of Albertans are doing their part each and every day and following the public health orders to keep themselves and others safe as we see record cases of COVID-19. 1/7 #ableg#abhealth
We owe it to them to do more to stop those who thumb their nose at the public health orders.
As such, Alberta’s NDP is calling for the following:
➡️ Triple the current fines for individuals to $3,600 per offence. These penalties would be the stiffest in Canada. 2/

➡️ Create a specific fine for individuals that obstruct enforcement of public health orders. This fine will specifically include harassment of frontline workers when they are enforcing mask mandates, physical distancing and household rules for patio dining. 3/7 #AbLeg
We adamantly oppose Jason Kenney’s cowardly decision to flee the legislature while critical public health measures such as paid sick leave have not been enacted, and the government’s broader response flounders.
The abrupt decision to close the legislature follows a week of falsehoods, misleading statements and reversals from Kenney.
On Wednesday, he claimed there is no relationship between public restrictions and viral spread, only to introduce modest new restrictions the following day.
