Albertans, you’re frustrated, you’re confused, you’re angry and you’re scared.

Premier Kenney's announcement should have helped, but instead it’s created more questions.

#ableg 🧵
First and foremost, do the measures that apply today, apply across the province or are they are still on a regional basis as was put forward last week?

If it’s the latter, it’s a profound failure.
The Premier is continuing to make false promises and create false hope, setting up for further challenges and disappointment in the weeks to come.
He’s undermining peoples’ ability to plan.

These new measures will have an immediate impact on Alberta small business owners struggling to stay afloat and to ride out this massive third wave.
They do not have adequate support. I again call on Jason Kenney to act on our calls to provide support to them through a $25,000 grant with broad eligibility and to enact many other measures we have called for at AlbertasFuture.ca
Today, we’ve heard that a number of Alberta schools — it’s not clear if it’s all of them — will be closed effective Friday.
Jason Kenney minimized the problem in our schools — for months — and now today hundreds of thousands of students have been forced out of their classrooms.
He claimed schools were safe and sat on his hands while school boards, teachers and parents begged for help.

He’s failed each and every student in our province.
Many of them are getting sick now, and their peers are in isolation, forced to learn from home yet again.
We didn’t have to be here. The number of cases in our classrooms is the result of Jason Kenney’s failure to provide schools with the resources to keep students and staff safe.
I call on Jason Kenney — again — to immediately establish an Alberta Learn From Home fund to support families as students move online.
We also still have so many Albertans who will continue to work, with record COVID-19 cases in our communities.

They will be in our hospitals, in our grocery stores, in our meat-packing plants, running our gas stations and more.
These workers still do NOT have a sick pay program.

I fear so many will still be forced to choose between staying home to help prevent transmission and paying their bills.
We would pass a bill on sick pay in a matter of hours, if only the Premier would take the padlock off the legislature.
And finally, on enforcement, the Premier’s declaration that you have to be a repeat offender is only to invite further non-compliance.
I am also concerned that tomorrow morning, we will hear from UCP government MLAs telling Albertans that they oppose these new measures — as they have done several times already.
I condemn this behaviour in the strongest possible terms — and I call on Jason Kenney to finally have the guts to throw these MLAs out of his caucus.

If you can’t support keeping Albertans safe — then you can’t sit in the government caucus. Period.

It’s as simple as that. /🧵

The vast majority of Albertans are doing their part each and every day and following the public health orders to keep themselves and others safe as we see record cases of COVID-19. 1/7 #ableg #abhealth
We owe it to them to do more to stop those who thumb their nose at the public health orders.
As such, Alberta’s NDP is calling for the following:

➡️ Triple the current fines for individuals to $3,600 per offence. These penalties would be the stiffest in Canada. 2/

➡️ Create a specific fine for individuals that obstruct enforcement of public health orders. This fine will specifically include harassment of frontline workers when they are enforcing mask mandates, physical distancing and household rules for patio dining.

We adamantly oppose Jason Kenney’s cowardly decision to flee the legislature while critical public health measures such as paid sick leave have not been enacted, and the government’s broader response flounders.

#ableg #abpoli #covid19ab #cdnpoli #alberta
The abrupt decision to close the legislature follows a week of falsehoods, misleading statements and reversals from Kenney.
On Wednesday, he claimed there is no relationship between public restrictions and viral spread, only to introduce modest new restrictions the following day.

Alberta is in the grips of a third wave… and they need to be able to trust their Premier.

But let’s look back at the second wave. New documents show AHS developed “Early Warning Triggers” when cases started to rise in the fall.
These triggers were defined as the point at which even IF public health orders were introduced THAT DAY… the ICU would STILL be overwhelmed.
The worst-case scenario trigger was 500 cases a day… which Alberta reached on October 30. But the premier went missing… doing nothing for WEEKS.

We have been overwhelmed with concerns from students, parents, teachers, subject matter experts and more about the curriculum put forward by Jason Kenney.

#abed #ableg
We’ve heard from Albertans that the curriculum being proposed will not prepare students for advanced education, for their careers and for their lives in general.
Premier Kenney's curriculum jeopardizes our economy by not providing children with the essential critical-thinking skills they need to succeed in a modern workplace and by implementing outdated educational practices that discourage more parents from choosing Alberta.

Today, I am calling on Premier @jkenney to immediately re-introduce public health measures to protect Albertans from the rising danger of the COVID-19 pandemic’s third wave.

Albertans’ lives are at stake and there are proven measures that could be protecting them. 1/10 #ableg
The Premier laid out a compelling case to take action and then failed to act. Jason Kenney is a weak and ineffective premier. 2/10 #ableg #abhealth
In his remarks on April 1, just before the Easter long weekend, Kenney said, “we know with great certainty that we will have close to 500 COVID patients in hospital just two weeks from now. If growth continues on its current pace, that will turn into about 1,000..." 3/10 #ableg

Have received a shocking electricity/utility bill of late?

We’ve heard from thousands of Albertans dealing with these massive bills at a time when they can least afford them.

In response, we’re calling for the following four actions:

1/5 #ableg
➡️ Provide direct consumer relief to two-thirds of Albertans (those earning up to $55,000 annually as an individual or $102,500 per couple). 2/5 #ableg
We want to model the relief program after the COVID-19 Energy Assistance Program offered in Ontario, which provided customers $750 in support both their electricity and natural gas bills. Consumers can apply for relief on both bills separately 3/5 #ableg
