10 pro-democracy figures in #HongKong were given more than a year's sentences for participating in an assembly in October 2019. Here's a piece from @austinramzy that puts it into the context of the crackdown on civil society that we have seen since 2019. nytimes.com/2021/05/28/wor…
"Fernando Cheung, a pro-democracy former lawmaker, said Friday that “such severe punishments” sent a message of deterrence to the people of Hong Kong days before an annual June 4 vigil to honor the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests."
"Hong Kong’s High Court issued an explanation for why it had denied bail to Claudia Mo, a moderate former lawmaker who is among 47 pro-democracy activists charged under a draconian new national security law."
"Judge Esther Toh cited, among other reasons, “accusations of desperation and loss of human rights and freedom” that Ms. Mo had made in interviews and WhatsApp conversations with journalists from international news organizations, including The New York Times."
"Activists, academics and others are increasingly wary of speaking to the foreign news media in Hong Kong, where press freedom is enshrined in the local constitution but under growing threat."
Here's a statement from @RSF_en regarding the further sentencing of pro-democracy figures including Jimmy Lai:
“It’s about time that the international community takes action to stop the judicial harassment of Jimmy Lai and to pressure the Hong Kong government into restoring full press freedom, a principle enshrined in the territory’s Basic Law” says Cédric Alviani.

One of #Taiwan's #COVID19 epicenter Taipei tried to run through the protocols of a possible level 4 alert lockdown today in theory. Level four alert will include measures like requiring all schools to stop classes and businesses to stop asking workers to go into offices.
Citizens won't be allowed to leave their houses unless it's necessary and there will only be 21,000 restaurants, supermarkets, convenience stores and gas stations open across the city. They will also limit citizens' movement from Taipei to other counties. cna.com.tw/news/firstnews…
There will also be limited times that traditional markets can operate. This has been one of the recent hotspots of infection highlighted by health officials. Train and high speed rail services also won't be making stops in Taipei.
Shocking news about the life imprisonment given to @Dolkun_Isa's brother, who like many #Uyghurs, were put into one of the many camps in #Xinjiang and lost contact with family members until the news of him being sentenced to life resurfaced.
‘’I am truly heartbroken to hear this news. My brother is an innocent man. He was punished because of my activism and work as a human rights activist," said @Dolkun_Isa.
‘’This is the third consecutive year that I have received such heartbreaking news, first learning that my mother died in a camp in 2019, and in 2020, I learned about my father’s death in a propaganda paper."
Foxconn's founder Terry Gou said his foundation is going to apply to import 5 million doses of German-made @BioNTech_Group#COVID19 vaccines to #Taiwan. He emphasized these are vaccines manufactured in Germany, and not the same as the ones from #China. cna.com.tw/news/firstnews…
Gou promised that his foundation will commission the qualified vendor to apply to the government regarding the import of the German-made vaccines. He said his team is now gathering all necessary information and he promised to share the whole process with the public.
Previous media reports suggested that Gou was interested in trying to import the BNT #COVID19 vaccines from Shanghai Fuson Pharmaceutical, which has the exclusive right to distribute the BNT vaccine in #China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau.
Some positive news from #Taiwan's #COVID19 epicenter Taipei. Mayor @KP_Taipei said earlier in the press conference that following the high compliance from citizens, the outbreak in the original hotspot Wanhua has eased even though ...cna.com.tw/news/firstnews…
... the outbreak in other districts has increased slightly. He said while the total number of cases hasn't had an obvious drop based on the rate of positive test results, he thinks Taipei's overall outbreak is now under control.
However, Ko also warned that any slip of attention among citizens could trigger the outbreak to get out of control once again. He said the current disease prevention measures need to be maintained until at least 70% of the citizens are vaccinated.
