Bad news for UK 🇬🇧 and the rest of the world… hospitalizations in England due to #DeltaVariant are now accelerating upward even faster than before, according to new data compiled by @COVID19actuary. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 is ~half fully #vaccinated—UK planning to start 3rd dose in Sept for age 50+.
2) Cases, hospitalizations, and deaths all increasing in the UK. Scotland cases now at all time record high too. Israel cases and hospitalizations up too.
3) England is also responsible for an outbreak in Scotland among soccer fans who traveled to London. Again all #DeltaVariant
4) How is this happening even when half the population vaccinated? 1) It spreads to unvaccinated (even via vaccinated carriers sometime), and the phenomena that a small % harmed when multiplied by large numbers infected, will still yield large numbers harmed in total. See 🧵
5) the Singapore Delta outbreak proves that vaccinated still transmitted. In this #DeltaVariant cluster alone, among 29 vaccinated who got infected, 21 transmissions events were between vaccinated-to-vaccinated or vaccinated-to-unvaccinated. That’s a lot! covid.viz.sg
6) Also notice (4 o’clock position) that many of the unvaccinated-to-unvaccinated first initially started from a vaccinated-to-unvaccinated transmission chain!!! This demonstrates why vaccinated people still need to mask up damnit!

7) #COVID19 death increasing in Alberta 🇨🇦 too — despite Canada being one of the most % vaccinated countries in the world. But #DeltaVariant (35% of Alberta) practically doesn’t care about 1-shot.
8) UK leaders have really failed to protect its children. Shameful. Also newsflash - kids transmit the virus and infect adults too. Shocking I know eh?
9) UK should listen to Australian health officials warn about the near 100% household transmission of #DeltaVariant, 4x more than before… and believe them.
10) Also notice the large number of asymptomatic transmission (many among vaccinated) in the Singapore outbreak analyses. This is why we need to mask - and do more testing in hotspots even when no symptoms. Masking vaccinated is key to stop chains of transmission to unvaxxed.
11) UK is now so desperate to stop #DeltaVariant that they are enacting 3rd doses for all UK 🇬🇧 residents over age 50 starting in September- that’s serious!
12) let’s not forget how quickly it spreads. Fleeting exposures of just 5-10 seconds is now enough with the new #DeltaVariant
13) US has finally begun seeing the #DeltaVariant waves cresting ashore as cases rise nationally for the first time in months. Hospitalizations in Missouri (right chart) also increasing.
14) Welp—Israel 🇮🇱 seeing back to back #COVID19 surges again. It’s a 60% 2-dose Pfizer vaccinated country.
15) And yes there’s unusual hospitalization increases in Israel 🇮🇱 too. And the new surge is mostly the #DeltaVariant.
16) Russia reports 679 new coronavirus deaths, a new all time one-day record increase. Russia is also a ~100% #DeltaVariant dominated country.
17) IMPORTANT DEBUNK— there is an inaccurate outdated NYT article floating out there today that used outdated data claiming UK hospitalizations not increasing. Totally wrong. UK hospital admissions most definitely increasing say multiple UK scientists. See debunk:

Overwhelmed hospitals are back—a hospital in Springfield (Missouri) now on “#COVID19 diversion", sending hospitalized patients to other cities and nearby state, as #DeltaVariant gains momentum where large swaths of residents aren’t vaccinated.

FACT: A virus that is less lethal than before (eg vaccination), or infects a lower risk (younger) population can actually *kill & maim more victims* if it’s more contagious (#DeltaVariant) or allowed to spread to more people (e.g. ⚽️ games), than if a virus is merely more lethal.
2) This above statement is proven by epidemiology models. Let’s not wait to “find out for ourselves” and then pretend “nobody could have predicted this” later when it’s too late.
3) Most of these people infected at #EuroCup were young. Most will not be hospitalized. But many will be hospitalized and transmit to others who are more vulnerable. And in the end it’ll maim more people than a less contagious virus that is merely more fatal.

Anyone who doubts the #DeltaVariant wave is coming only needs to look at Israel🇮🇱 and UK🇬🇧—two of the most heavily vaccinated countries in the world. Hospitalizations are increasing ⬆️ in both countries too. US🇺🇸 is ~1 month behind UK—but US vaccinations are slowly. #COVID19 🧵
