Due to the #COVID19 pandemic, 2⃣3⃣ million children 👦👧 missed out on basic vaccines through routine immunization services in 2020, increasing by 3.7 million and the highest number since 2009.
Without high childhood vaccination rates, countries face risks of multiple disease outbreaks. Spread of diseases like #measles, polio or meningitis could be catastrophic for countries already battling #COVID19.
Even before #COVID19, global childhood vaccination rates against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, measles & polio had stalled for several years, putting millions of children at risk from devastating but preventable diseases.
As health services resume, do not delay getting vaccinated. If you wait until an outbreak occurs, there may not be enough time to get all the vaccine doses you need. #VaccinesWork!
WHO is supporting countries to get back on track with immunization by:
✅ Restoring services & vaccination campaigns
✅ Amplifying vaccination info
✅ closing gaps in immunization coverage
Through the Immunization Agenda 2030, WHO & partners aim to
🎯 Achieve 90% coverage for essential vaccines given in childhood & adolescence
🎯 Halve the number of children who completely miss out on vaccination
🎯 Introduce 500 new vaccines in low & middle-income countries
@DrTedros "Last week marked the 4th consecutive week of increasing cases of #COVID19 globally, with increases recorded in all but one of WHO’s six regions. And after 10 weeks of declines, deaths are increasing again"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "We continue to hear reports from all regions of the world about hospitals reaching capacity. The Delta variant is ripping around the world at a scorching pace, driving a new spike in #COVID19 cases and death"-@DrTedros
"The world is at a perilous point in this pandemic.
We have just passed the tragic milestone of 4 million recorded #COVID19 deaths, which likely underestimates the overall toll"-@DrTedros
@DrTedros "Some countries with high vaccination coverage are now planning to rollout booster shots in the coming months and are dropping public health social measures and relaxing as though the #COVID19 pandemic is already over"-@DrTedros
🆕 treatment recommendation from WHO:
WHO recommends life-saving interleukin-6 receptor blockers to treat #COVID19 and urges producers to join efforts to rapidly increase access.
Interleukin-6 receptor blockers are a class of medicines that are lifesaving in patients who are severely or critically ill with #COVID19, especially when administered alongside corticosteroids.
Patients severely or critically ill with #COVID19 often suffer from an overreaction of the immune system, which can be very harmful to the patient’s health. Interleukin-6 blocking drugs – tocilizumab and sarilumab – act to suppress this overreaction.
Limited electricity, lack of fuel, damaged telecommunications equipment, no cellular service = barriers to delivering life-saving health services to people in #Tigray, 🇪🇹. WHO must be able to provide medical supplies for #healthworkers to use in clinics, hospitals.
WHO teams have delivered medical supplies to Abi Addi hospital in #Tigray, 🇪🇹, enabling #healthworkers to give emergency care to patients.
Essential medicines for a range of conditions have been delivered to Hagere Selam, a town in Northern 🇪🇹. It’s one of many health care facilities WHO and partners are supporting to ensure life-saving health services can be restored. #Tigray
