🧵Note from the Admin:
As the handler for the dog, I need to advocate for myself and provide education. There's too many comments to respond to, but I should add some context.
We would never be offended if someone with an allergy requested to be moved because of it.
1/
However allergies were not the issue.
I also understand fear and if someone is visibly afraid or indicates that, I try to give them space and be unobtrusive. Fear is not something protected by the human rights act. Accommodations for a disability are. Fear was not the issue.

2/
This was about personal beliefs. It wasn't that they asked to be moved that was upsetting. It was how. It's easy to simply ask a server to provide a different table in a quieter section, closer to a washroom or to say you'd be more comfortable at the back of the restaurant.

3/
There is no need to make the request about anyone else or even bring them into the discussion. They could have upheld their own beliefs and we would never have even known that they had any issue with me having a service dog as a medical accommodation. That's not how it went.
4/
Kuno was between a wall and my wheelchair, tucked as far under the table as it's base would allow. Had they been seated at the table beside us they wouldn't have known he was there, but they were at a table behind us and spotted him after they sat down and called staff over.
5/
They didn't immediately ask to be moved. They questioned why there was an animal in the restaurant. The server tried to explain that the dog is working and not a pet. They wanted him to be moved. That's much like asking to have my wheelchair moved.

6/
The server approached me and asked if I could help her explain what a service dog is. I didn't feel it was appropriate to leave Kuno at the table and go into a possibly confrontational discussion, however I explained our Govt assesses all service dogs, that he was qualified &

7/
provided her our govt issued ID card as it cited the Service Dog Act and she could then have a properly worded explanation of how our laws prevent discriminating against anyone accompanied by a service dog. Only then did they ask to be moved to a different area far from us.

8/
In hindsight I'm not sure what I would have done differently. Cleanliness is a valid concern but we are required to maintain grooming. There's more dirt on my wheelchair wheels, people's shoes or strollers than on Kuno. This is why in restaurants, dogs go under the table.

9/
Here's the thing, it wasn't this family's belief that a service dog that gives me independence shouldn't be in public that bothered me. It was that I was being talked about, singled out, and that suddenly others were listening and watching. They could have just asked to move.
10/
It was still awkward after they moved because now others felt bad and gave the sympathetic looks and the staff were walking on eggshells and it was uncomfortable.
The next family to sit in that spot was the exact opposite. They kept telling their kids to "look at puppy".

11/
"Tell puppy you love it". Say "I love you puppy." I was tempted to tell them that we were there to enjoy dinner, that they shouldn't distract the dog, and we aren't one of the mall's entertainment attractions but there had already been enough awkward moments during that meal.
12/
Thankfully Kuno is a good dog. He glanced at them a few times but didn't move. He stayed under the table and watched me and tried to ignore the humans. He did a better job of it than the humans did of just being quiet and ignoring him.
He's right. Our species needs training.
13/
We managed to enjoy our comedy show and were in a lineup after. A couple politely asked if they could ask a few questions about him. Yes. Absolutely. I even asked if they'd like to say hi and gave Kuno his release cue. That respect they showed was relieving. And appreciated.
14/
Here's the takeaway from all this.
There's no need to single out, embarrass or make things awkward for others. If you don't want to be around someone because of their service dog, the way they look, their cultural attire or anything else, just go quietly.
Remember that a
15/
service dog is considered medical equipment. If you wouldn't do it to someone's wheelchair, cane or oxygen tank, don't do it to a service dog. Most of all, whether you're taking a stand against something, or you're trying to show support, be respectful. Be kind. Be like Kuno.

The 10 most important things I've learned in 2020.

10. Be very careful where you put your teeth when carrying balloons. It's also probably not a good idea to carry eggs if you can't carry a balloon.

#DogsOfTwitter #yegdog #CanadianDogs #LifeLessons
9. Humans should order more dog treats and less of these bags of air. Don't they know they don't need to get air shipped to them?
8. I would make a stunning statue!

Tonight I'm going to share a special
#ChristmasStory with you. It's based on the story our mamas tell us so that we aren't afraid and bark at Santy Claws. My canine friend Moe & a human named Jodie inspired me to create this as a holiday gift for my Twitter friends.

1/
Please follow along and be patient with me.

Our Story is called:
Moe Knows: A Christmas Tail.

Moe Knows loneliness.

He was an adorable puppy. Some kind of bully breed mix born just before Christmas. When he was just a little tyke he was bought by a man wanting something
2/
that would grow into a big guard dog. So Moe was taken from his mama & siblings and went to his new home. His first night there he spent alone in a garage with only a thin blanket between him and the floor. Moe cried all night.

I'm finally ready to try & make the cake!!!
The hardest part so far was carrying the eggs. But I did good & didn't break them!!!

#DogsOfTwitter #Dogs
Ohmydogness!!!!
My cake batter is all ready to go in the pan.
This is where it's important to ask an adult human for help. It's always ok to ask for help when you need it.
I'm pretty excited. It's going to be an Apple Chai Spice Cake!

#DogsOfTwitter #Dogs #Baking
The batter is in a greased pan. I have my ovenmitt on & a grownup human ready to help me put it in the preheated oven.
This has been so much fun!!!
Thanks for all your encouragement...
and remember... It's a #surprise. This is just between us.

Grateful...
(thread)

#FeelGoodFriday started early for us. We will go to bed tonight grateful for what we have & that it's enough we could do something for another.

My Mistress took Roxy out for the bedtime pottywalk & when they got back, in between the front doors where

1/
the door intercom is was a young man. He apologized and said he was just warming up. He wasn't dressed very warm, and had a duffel bag with him. One can only assume it contained the few things he owned. He had a blanket over his shoulders & was warming his hands over the

2/
heater.

He made no attempt to follow them through the door once they unlocked it.
Before getting my leash my Mistress grabbed an empty plastic bag. She put a few snack packages of Crackers with cheese, a chocolate bar and some rice krispie treats into it. She went through

I try so hard to do a good job, but after 4 days of no good walks I was so excited that I became silly. We had stopped in a driveway to let some approaching people pass & when I noticed their dog was off leash I stood up, gave a "Wanna chase me?" snort & rolled in the snow.

1/
I know that's not proper #ServiceDog etiquette & it's doubtful I'd ever do such things in an actual work environment, but it's also important people remember we aren't programmed machines. We're sentient beings & sometimes we'll make the wrong choice.

2/
What's really important is that we respond & stop what we're doing as soon as we're told "No", "Quit", "Stop" or any other cue that tells us we've made a bad choice. Although a mistake has been, our handler remains in control. I get rewarded anytime I respond to "No".

#AbLeg
Dear diary,
I know no matter what, I must put my feelings aside and never be aggressive to a person. It's part of being a service dog.
But right now I wish I was allowed to take a big crap on the steps of the #AlbertaLegislature to show my disgust. The humans ... 1/9
that have the privilege to represent #Alberta citizens are preaching #inclusion and promising to tear down #barriers and tackle systemic #discrimination are the same people that let my mistress slip through the cracks and are why we live in nearly complete #segregation from...2/9
our community. They claim to promote #inclusion and #independence of the disabled with their tax payer funded program to provide essential #mobility equipment, like the power wheelchair my mistress needs so we can leave our home without human assistance. More than a year...3/9
