1/5 My better half, who is the baker had to work a long day today for an event, so I am trying to impersonate being a baker, yes, it’s from a box, but that doesn’t guarantee success based on my past history baking… #Baking ImageImageImageImage
2/5 First half of the mix, they appear to be cupcakes, they baked, and the toothpick came out clean, and they came right out of the tray, a good start! 🔥#Baking ImageImageImage
3/5 Hedging my bets, I used the second half of the mix for a small cake, I figure if one is bad hopefully I’ll have cooked the other right! #Baking ImageImageImageImage

Why #Baking Soda is used in #cooking?

Baking soda, an #alkaline compound, produces carbon dioxide bubbles when combined with an acid. The #bubbles get trapped, causing dough or batter to expand, or rise. This creates an airy texture in pancakes, cakes, bread, and other foods.
Baking soda also releases gas as it decomposes. When exposed to temperatures above 176 degrees Fahrenheit (80 degrees Celsius) in the oven, baking soda release bubbles and can cause food to rise.
For baked goods, usually to react with an acid to create carbon dioxide to leaven quickbreads, cakes, etc. It typically takes the form of double acting baking powder(unless buttermilk is used).

I'm finally ready to try & make the cake!!!
The hardest part so far was carrying the eggs. But I did good & didn't break them!!!

#DogsOfTwitter #Dogs
Ohmydogness!!!!
My cake batter is all ready to go in the pan.
This is where it's important to ask an adult human for help. It's always ok to ask for help when you need it.
I'm pretty excited. It's going to be an Apple Chai Spice Cake!

#DogsOfTwitter #Dogs #Baking
The batter is in a greased pan. I have my ovenmitt on & a grownup human ready to help me put it in the preheated oven.
This has been so much fun!!!
Thanks for all your encouragement...
and remember... It's a #surprise. This is just between us.

So my mum (who knows everything) has found this method of multiplying fresh #yeast, which many of you in the UK (& me during lockdown) have difficulties getting their hands on. Here's my test.

½ cube fresh yeast
15 gr sugar
100 ml water
100 gr wheat flour

#baking #Cooking

Mix & let it rise until bubbly. Use any available baking form (or ice cube form, which I do not possess) & apportion. Tip: use a wet spoon, dip in water before every transfer (tested, works). Freeze.

Now we need to figure out how powerful that yeast is compared to the original and we will do that tomorrow. Stay with me.

I’ve reworked a recent recipe, and it is a triumph if I do say so myself. New and improved - Salted Caramel & Pear Brownie. This is beautiful. If you liked my first effort, you will absolutely adore this! #coronacooking
Ingredients
2 eggs
100g caster sugar
1/2tsp vanilla essence
100g dark chocolate
50g salted butter
100g ground almonds
1 pear

Salted caramel
100g caster sugar
45g salted butter
60ml cream
1/2tsp salt
#coronacooking
Make the caramel. Put the sugar in a pan over a medium/high heat. Watch it carefully. When it begins to melt, stir until it is totally liquid & turning brown. Cut the butter into 6 pieces & add it a piece at a time, stirring constantly to combine it with the sugar.

It's Friday! Do you have any plans to bake this weekend? That is - if you can get hold of some flour! If you're #baking with self-raising (self-rising) flour, you might give a nod to its inventor, Bristol baker Henry Jones.

Thread
In 1845, Jones applied for a patent for a revolutionary invention that would change baking forever - a process of baking without yeast! The patent is now held @bristolarchives. Jones's patent flour made baking much easier and faster and of course he claimed it tasted better too!
Within a year, Jones's self-raising flour was so popular that he was appointed purveyor of patent flour and biscuits to Queen Victoria! Jones later worked with Florence Nightingale to improve the quality of bread given to soldiers deployed in the Crimea.

In a break from my usual postings, here’s a surprisingly simple recipe for chocolate chip cookies, as made for the first time by a 41 year old man. #baking 1/9

First mix *some* butter, sugar (some white, some sticky brown). 3/9

OK, friends, in this thread I'm going to walk you through how to bake these #yummy lye pretzel rolls. #quarantineProject #recipe #baking #baker #bakingbread #homemade
Here are the ingredients: 2 cups of lukewarm water, a scant 6 cups of bread flour, a packet of yeast, 1 tablespoon of canola oil, 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt, and 3 teaspoons of sugar.
You'll also need food-grade lye. This scares people but it shouldn't. You need to take care when using it, but it's really not a huge deal. I've made dozens of batches over the years and never had any problem. You can order it online. I ordered mine from essentialdepot.com.

Fresh Crusty Bread - straight from the oven. Today’s #coronacooking recipe is a ‘no knead’ yeast bread. This takes minutes to put together - a little time to proof, and 45 mins to bake. A fresh, crusty loaf in about two hours. You most try this one. #baking #bread
Ingredients:
400g plain flour
7g dried yeast
1tsp sugar
1tsp salt
360ml warm water

I usually use strong white flour to make bread - there’s none of that in the shops here right now - I know the same is true for lots of you. But you can make this with plain flour. #coronacooking
Dissolve the sugar in the warm water in a bowl or jug. Add the yeast and allow it to dissolve and activate. You’ll know it’s ready when it froths up on the top of the water. #coronacooking

if you've been thinking of #baking your own bread at home during These Difficult Times, and are interested in #sourdough, here's a thread on how to get started, and some tips and tricks i've learned over the last ~decade of wrangling sourdough.
first things first: all you need for sourdough bread is flour and water. almost any flour will do, with varying quality of results. plain bread flour (the kind in big sacks) is fine. whole wheat is fine. rye is fine. spelt is fine. whatevs. you'll get some kind of bread.
Almost any sourdough bread you make yourself will be better than storebought, cheaper than storebought, last longer at room temperature than store bought, and will give you a frisson of apocalypse-surviving domestic badassery. Even if you suck at it.
